Southern California

My oldest son is a Marine and is stationed at Camp Pendleton in southern California. I was wondering if anyone on here may be able to offer any advise on the hunting out there. What public hinting is available? When I was on Pendelton thirty years ago we had plenty of ducks on base so I never went anywhere else. He says there still are but that it is very competitive to get a spot in the lottery and he is looking for other areas to hunt.

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

There are lots of places depending on how far he wants to drive. Salton Sea or the San Diego Lakes would probably be the closest. Tell him to pick up a copy of Western Outdoors News. It has all of the southern Cal spots in it. Hunting has been fair in the Owens Vally. If he gets up this way have him get in touch with me. Would be happy to show him around.

For what its worth, some good Pacific Brant hunting is just down the border around St. Martin island. (N. Baja, Mexico) I think the "Old Mill" area was were some friends stayed. Its been a while for me though, I hunted the area, by fishing boat, in the early 90's. Good luck.

Just googled it. The "Old Mill" is still operational with Brant hunts in San Quintin! Might be something to think about.

Tim - have your son look up Wister NWR(which hunts Wed, Sat & Sunday), it's located just east of the Salton Sea off Highway 111. There's been some bird movement recently so I'd imagine it'd be worth the time to check it out. The city lakes around here haven't been doing much so I think Wister is probably the best bet at the moment. The Salton Sea might also be an option but with the current low water level, it's difficult to access unless by boat. Let me know if you have any other questions.
