Spar varnish & Gesso

Do I need to use gesso over spar varnish? Diane at the duck blind told me I need to use gesso over their cork sealer.

for textured bird we use gesso with texturing paste. for a smooth bird, ronans. i think gesso would work by itself though.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Gesso, it's not waterproof. If you want to use it, you can mix it 50/50 with liquitex (learned that from Paul Foytach). My preference is Goldens Regular Gel for all my texturing...personal preference but definitely over any sealer or varnish.
