Speaking of Black Ducks....

Here I am holding the only one I have ever seen in the field, shot by my partner (after I missed it) back in late December 2001.
Havent seen one or heard of one being shot down here since. But I understand they are a little more common in north Alabama.

Interesting to hear that is a trophy down there. There is no shortage of Blacks up here Carl. Late season it can be frustrating watching the flocks of Blacks and knowing you already have your one bird.

Location, location, location.
If you told somebody around here you shot a long Island limit.
They would know you shot two brant and a blackduck.

And since Sutton isn't here to say to obligatory hat comment, I'll do it.... Annnddddddddddddd there's the hat. ha ha Sorry Carl, couldn't resist.

Nice! Always wanted to see a black duck in person. They are quite rare around here also, but a few have been shot over the years. There is no native population of black ducks within 500 miles of here but they turn up every now and then. Funny thing is that scoters, oldsquaw, harlequins, and brant have been recorded in Utah also-that big salt pond sure acts as a duck magnet!

You're just a no-good SOB trying to wreck my post and ruin my Christmas, what next, are you going to insult my kids?
I bet you shoot sissy ass park ducks over black cork decoys with the wrong color eyes and a spinning wing decoy with a pole up its butt.
You need to be banned.
Gosh I hate this place and all of you.
I am going to quit and go form my own forum.

How was that? Pretty good, did I miss anything?
:)

Oh, that reminds me, I got a replacement for "the hat"! the old one worn out years ago. I will try to get pics of the new one.

Late season on St Louis Bay in Duluth, MN brings quite a few blacks down - and, big flocks of green-winged teal - just as things are freezing up.

my ct limit is usually just a black, i have only seen 1 brant.

we always shoot limits, FULL LIMITS (of black ducks :)

they do sometimes make late season frustrating when that is all you see during the day other than hooded mergies

I had one of those alcohal burning hand warmers back in high school, used it for ice fishing. Also had the ones that burned charcoal sticks.
They still make those???

ive got one of the stick ones, they smell horrible.

keeping my hands warm is the second best part about hunting with a dog

Thought would share an experience last weekend involving Black ducks. Amazing when you've been waterfowling 40 years and see a first.

Hunting the marsh with an open hole in the ice in front of blind. We shoot two Blacks at 25 to 30 yards which fall straight down hitting the ice. They landed about 20 yds apart. Both hit, we saw their butts then within seconds both disappeared under the ice. Dog and both of us went right out. We found the one about 2 yards from the hole under ice with a head shot The second we never found after breaking the ice for 30 yard diameter.
I've seen it with one duck but never two simultaneously.

If you want to get more black ducks try using handwarmers. Has to be the metal ones that burn lighter fluid. In my experience, black ducks are attracted to the smell. Works even better than motorized decoys.

That's a great picture. Never heard the hand warmer trick before.

Shayne,
that is true for sure. If the Handwarmer is out it is prime black duck weather.

I am sure some of the science types around here would argue that the statistical correlation is weak, but I know if my hands are cold and I need the warmer there will be Blacks looking to get into the decoys.

Bob

Great shot of the boat set up on the water. The snow makes it.
