Anyone used that brand? What about the Dogtra ones? I don't need nothin' too fancy, but the transmiter has to be little and reciever waterproof. SpotDog has one for $170 that looks ok to me.

Check it out here if you want.

Mike, I have a sportdog 2000 with a new collar and receiver I'd sell for $175 if your interested, Tonyg

Mike, sorry should have given you more info, it's the top of the line sportdog collar, transmitter and receiver are the same size as the one your looking at, but are max4,and with alot more features. the trans. is used, but in great shape, I lost the on off switch cover somehow and had to get a warranty replacement collar and receiver they won't sell just the cover. I don't use it as my lab. won't respond to it, was just using it for the tones, but if you'd like it, i'll sell it to you, great collar, Tonyg

Hey Mike,

I have been using Sportdog collars for years and they seem to be very durable and work well. The best thing is if you ever need anything from Sportdog, their customer service is the best in the business.

Holy cow Tony that seems like a pretty good deal to me. SO the collar is new, how old is the transmitter? Is it just like this one in the picture?

Explain how your dog wouldn't respond to it.

Mike,

I haven't heard anything bad about the SportDog collar but have no personal experience. If the deal with Tony falls through you might check out The Collar Clinic. They are good people to work with and often have reconditioned collars available.

I prefer the older model Tri Tonics collars. I can hold the transmitter in my hand and my fingers automatically fall on the buttons, I don't have to look at the buttons to make a correction.

Mike, thats it, the transmitter is about 1 1/2 years old. my lab just yelps even at the lowest setting and lays down, it isn't helping at all for corrections, thank god he's working out without it, I was just planning on using the tone to get his attention when out on a retrieve, but I havn't had to yet, it's just sitting in the box collecting dust, if your interested email me and we can work it out, tonyg

Sounds good Tony, and thanks for the info Tom. I have an older tritronics one too, but my wife doesn't like to carry the big transmitter when she takes Jenny for walks - she says she feels dorky carrying the big thing around. So the new collar is more about keeping Jane happy than actual dog training. Jenny is still learning her trail manners. She is friendly of course because she's still young, but a friendly lab running up to sled dog team = lots of swearing and tangled mess!

i might be interested in the tritronics coller that the wifey has deemed dorky if it is in good working shape let me know pm me or reply iether way

Mike I own the 2 dog model I've had it for at least three years. I like it better than the tri tronics, the tri tronics transmitter is to big and bulky and NOT WATER PROOF, trust me I found out the hard way twice. The warranty on the Sport dog is great, if I remember correctly I think it's 100% the first year then a life time where it never cost more than $35 for what ever needs to be fixed. That's the benefit of buying it new. The transmitter comes with a strap to wear around your neck but I've seen holsters now that you can get or a sleeve with a pouch that fits on the stock of your shotgun, great idea for a correction a split second before you pull the trigger. How's my scooter coming along , moving closer to top o the list I hope.

I have the sport dog field trainer 400. After about 2 months the reciever's battery connection broke. I had not filled out a warranty card. No problem, the customer service was great. They sent me a completely new collar. I have had some concerns that it doesn't work in extreme cold, also the battery runs out pretty quick. In retrospect, I wish I had spent a little more on a higher quality collar. Hope this helps.

I haven't seen anyone yet be happy with a sportdog collar. I bought one for a hunting collar (kinda stupid to take a $500 pro 500 hunting) and its a peice of crap. Erratic operation in when it works and how long and intensity. The hardest thing about using a collar properly, is not getting a correction when you need it, and getting the right amount of correction without rocking a boat. None of the collars from any of the cut rate compaines have ever done that. My sportdog collar only use now is when I have a dog barking in the kennels.

The new g3 tritronics have small transmitters you're wife will love. You can buy the expandlable model (add collars later) sport model for like 230 from cabelas, and have a great entry level collar. Its a lot cheaper to buy something that works the first time, then for your second purchase, and your dog will appricate it too. travis

I spend several hours a day training labs. Tri tronics has been the best, they cost a little more but worth it. The g3 seems evern better but have only had it for three months.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate you all taking the time to type all that. Travis - how do you know the zapper is acting erratic in intensity?

Mike

If you can't tell when dog has been corrected, either not at all, or way too much, you don't need to push any buttons besides the tv remote!

Dogs require different amounts of correction, depending on their activity and the just plain personal toughness of the the dog (i.e. bottom). Usually you know your dog, and if you dont you start low and go high. I dont nag, if a dog needs a correction he needs a correction. I want it to be clear cut as to why he is getting corrected, how he gets out of it, and a fitting punishment suits the crime. if I want a low burn, I don't want him jumping up in the air vocalizing cause my peice of crap collar wont be consistant. And if I miss the chance to make a correction, I give the wrong message and will have more work to do later, and the dog will suffer for it because of the confusion. If i get a cast refusual on a blind, and i go to correct and my collar doesnt work, now the dog is further off line... and will take more line correction AND more physical correction. Why? Its not his fault... he made an error, I stopped, and corrected... now if the correction isnt there, my dog pays the price. No sir, I wont let that happen to my dogs. My dogs wont pay for me saving a few bucks on a cheapie collar (or dog food, or equipement, or dog box, or any of the other crap I buy! hehe. My dogs are the best, so they get the best, and get treated fairly in every instance!).

An eletric collar is nothing more than a communication tool... dog willfully did wrong, or showed no effort, I can run my fat butt out there and get in his face, or I can correct with a collar instanly with a predetermined amount of correction and get my point across. An errattic collar doesn't allow me to do that, ergo, its almost worthless. No other communication tool you own would you deal with only being 75% accurate. What if your wife said pick up milk, but your cell phone said butter? Whut if you only got 75% of your emails? First 3 sections of the paper, instead of 4? All of these things you'd consider useless. But cheapie dog collars working 75% and causing more problems with dogs than they solve, is ok if they got great customer service and are 50 bucks cheaper??? heck naw. Buy a tritronics, you and your dog will be glad you did.

Not everybody needs, or should even have, a top of the line collar. But everyone needs a dependable collar, that does what it is supposed at the right times, and right amounts. Next hunting season I'll buy one of g3 exps for a hunting collar, bet on it. travis

I totally agree with your philosophy Travis, I didn't realize collars could be that erratic that they wouldn't send a correction all the time. Live and learn. You have alot more experience than me in this area that's for sure.

Thanks,

Mike

Tried Sport Dog 'cause it was cheaper. When the antenna came apart I was stuck with it. Changed to Tri-Tronics and could not be happier.

Kennith-I thought I had see you on the forum before. I haven't heard anything yet on those OFA hips we did last week. I'll let you know.
