Spring time in the woods - tom turkeys

I was invited to hunt turkey on private land, last week. Not a huge challenge since we knew their morning patterns, but still had to be stealthy and sure got to watch a great show before the fireworks put an end to his strutting for the ladies....

The land owner has invited my 8 year old son (with me as mentor) back to try for another one. We know there are a number of jakes and at least one more tom out there. We have until the end of May to get him on one. Fingers crossed...

10" beard, 1.25" spurs, 23.2 lbs.

Congrats on a very nice bird Brian. Hopefully your luck will continue. Great time of the year to be in the woods!

Thanks to you all for the kind words and encouragement. It's been 5 years since I was last able to get out into the woods for spring turkey. Watching the show this guy performed was a true treat of the first degree.

I've had Master Garrett out twice over the past 10 days but we have only seen the hens. REALLY close up hens (which was WAY cool for him) but we just need to catch a break and have a suitor strolling along behind. We've been busy with his baseball this week but going to try to get out this weekend with him again. The land owner has seen a few jakes around the past few days so we are hopeful.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank publicly the MI DNR and MI lawmakers, who signed into law this March of 2012, the Youth Mentor program, which opened the door for more youth hunting and fishing opportunities in Michigan. Spring Turkey is just one of a number of game species Garrett can pursue through this program, in 2012.

Best,
Brian
