Yes, it's just a piece of epoxy coated 1/4" okoume screwed on as a "sacrificial" surface to protect the "real" transom. I put a smaller one on the other side where the screw plates dig in. Another technique frequently used is to have an aluminum mount made. I figured the wood was cheaper and would be easy for the teeth on the motor bracket to bite into. You may want to post a question to see how folks with aluminum protectors like them.
