St. Lawrence Duck Boats?

I've been lurking here for a while, and thought this would be a good a post to start with... does anyone here know anything about St. Lawrence Duck Boats from Sommerstown Ontario? The only info I can find is in the "old duck boats" section of this site...

I had a chance to hunt one a couple of years ago and thought it was a decent boat. I recently found one parked on a lawn for sale, $600 bucks with a trailer but no motor. Other than rotten rub rails, the boat looks pretty good, and the price sounds about right. Any comments or help would be appreciated,

Jay, I'm not familular with that boat but if its the style that suits your hunting and the trailer is sound I'd jump on it for the $600. Best of luck to you, Jim

They made two boats at one point in time. I've hunted several timesout of the large 17' swat boats and owned the smaller 16' semi flat bottom.

I know the had some issues with the transoms. I had to rebuild mine and put an aluminum plate to add strength to it.

Where did you see the the boat? I know recently I've seen two for sale(with motors) in the Cornwall, On area.

Jim, at 600 bucks i think you're right... assuming everything checks out.

Eric, glad you mentioned the transom; this is the area that i'm most concerned about. It looks like there was an old repair to the fibreglass on the top part of the transom, and its got me wondering what the inside looks like... if it does need replacing, it may not be such a great deal after all.

I found the boat in a small town east of Toronto. Any chance you know more about those boats in Cornwall? (prices, location, etc) I'm actually heading down there for a wedding this weekend, and if i can find the time i'd be interested in checking them out (at the very least it would give me something to compare to)

Thanks for your help! JD

Jay,

I have a 17 ft St. Lawrence and it is awesome for hunting. The flat bottom makes it a very shallow draft of only about 3 inches. I have an older 20 hp Merc on it and that is all you would need for it. It responds extremely well to steering and can turn on a dime. Great for shallow water puddler hunting bcz it covers up well and you can push pole it into the reeds. it hides beautifully.

When the water is rough (waves of 3 ft) it does tend to be pushed sideways because it lacks a keel (built on a freighter canoe type hull design).
I replaced the oak rub rail on mine with a 2 inch by half inch thick rubber conveyer belt. just use stainless steel screws and put one every 6 inches.
you'll love the boat.

There was one recently for sale in Oak Ridges, parked out front on the trailer, I took a look and the transom was shot. Nice looking boat though. Keep a close eye on the transom!

Thanks for the replies guys,

Rob, glad to hear you enjoy the boat so much. I'm pretty sure this is the smaller model that they made, but its good to hear that they hunt well.

Braden, are you referring to the Oak Ridges area near Aurora? The boat I'm looking at is located in Durham Region, and I'd like to make sure it's not the same one! Also, how did you determine the transom was shot? I'm not sure how to check without opening it up...

I've attached a few pics in case anyone is wondering what these boats look like,

Jay,

that is the exact same boat I have. I would buy it in a heart beat.
one other thing you can do is drill a drain hole into the 'splash over' attached to the transom. this will get annoying water out so it doesn't sit there and contribute to rotting the transom when your boat sits in the driveway. the aluminum plate idea to reinforce the transom is a good idea.

cheers,

rob

Jay,

Thats not the same boat, but the same model( the one i looked at was near aurora). The transom on the one I looked at was literally spongy on the inside of the boat. For all intents and purposes, the outside looked fine, it was only with some careful prodding that my buddy and I figured out that the boat would need a lot of work! Just be careful is all, if things look good, I'd snap it up for $600! Have fun!
