Starting to lay

I'm fortunate enough to be able to drive by 4 of my duck boxes along the shore of our local lake. I saw a couple of pairs on boxes this morning and shot these two from the window of my car. I will never get tired of seeing our State duck and giving them a hand with nesting boxes.

This duck box is probably 20-25 years old. I raised it up a few years ago as well as added a new predator guard and usually get a batch or two from it each Spring. I love these little ducks!IMG_2678.JPG

Good morning, Paul~

Congratulations!

I will be making some cedar shavings later this morning - so I can walk out on the ice and add some fresh bedding to my 3 boxes. I plan to do it today because we're getting 8 or 10 inches of snow tomorrow. It's14 degrees right now - perhaps a bit too chilly for the Summer Duck.

But - walking in from the shop just now - I did hear Great Horned Owls hooting (more like "whoot"ing, actually) - so they are probably laying hereabouts (eastern NYS).

All the best,

SJS

Great job my friend, I'm hoping to be sending you a bunch of woodies this winter. I have been doing wood duck boxes for many many years. There is nothing like seeing your hard work payoff. Keep up the good work and keep building boxes.

South Shore Waterfowlers are putting up Wood Duck boxes in South Haven County Park tomorrow. Temps forecast in low 20-s with wind at 30 mph. Should be a fun day.

There definitely are Woodies here based on grandson Alex getting a pair on youth day last year.

Hey Paul,

They are fun to watch. I have three boxes in the creek behind my house. They haven't started to lay eggs yet, but they are checking the boxes. Had a Hoodie go in one yesterday morning.

My plan to put a few more boxes out just got a jump start as I found a pile of 1x12x5 foot reclaimed cedar boards on facebook for 4 dollars each. Blessed to see these ducks and able to help the cavity nesters.

Keep us updated on your success. We watch ours from the house with binoculars.

I was fishing ahead of this cold front Thursday and checked 3 new boxes I installed 2 weeks ago. Hens started to lay in two boxes and one hen is sitting hard. These early nesters always worry me due to lack of ground cover for ducklings.

My partner enjoys checking boxes too. He is both interested and very well restrained when hens fly out of the box. This is his 4th season checking boxes so he?s a veteran B2E8EE5D-C923-4DBF-A833-FC675BD8EEA9.jpeg4D0C665E-4518-4B48-98C7-25F383DCC0D0.jpeg
