Successful Waterfowling By Zack Taylor

I just finished reading Zack Taylor's Successful Waterfowling. Great read and will get anyones blood pumping to get out after the waterfowl. Funny how little our obsession and how we pursue it has changed since the book was published in 1974.

You are correct. The techniques and desires haven't changed much. About the only thing that has really changed is the equipment. Amazing array of technology available to us now as opposed to then.

My favorite Waterfowling read.

I even built a 12' Widgeon Sneakbox from it.

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to to Zack on a few occasions. I was in high school at the time working at a local hunting/fishing store. He LOVED to talk duck hunting. He got me interested in decoys and ducks, as I was a mere deer hunter at the time.
Funny thing was I didn't know about his book until years later because he never mentioned it.

Charlie D,

How cool that you met Zack Taylor! I've had a copy of Zack's book since the early '80s. I pull it out and reread certain chapters every fall/winter. I even have articles that Zack wrote about how to buy a used outboard, etc., that I've cut out and saved.

Thanks for sharing your story. Can you imagine what it might have been like to accompany Zack on a duck hunt or two?

He did alot of gunning around here, I'm sure there are some guys around who gunned with him. I never asked him but he seemed like the kind of guy who would take you on a hunt if you asked...
His book is a good read, I look it over from time to time. I dont know if he wrote any other books? He used to write for a magazine, that much he told me. Maybe freelance writer??

Zack was the boat editor for ,"Sports Afield", for years..I built a coffin box boat, that he drew up and
put in the magazine in the late sixties or early seventies.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Zack Taylor in person but got to know him through his writings. I read his articles in Sports Afield when I was a kid. My autographed copy of "Successful Waterfowling" is well-used, having been purchased shortly after it was first published back in 1974. I studied all of the boat plans in the book and eventually built a Widgeon a number of years ago. Zack Taylor was also the editor of the "Stories of the Old Duck Hunters" books in which he compiled most Gordon MacQuarrie's Old Duck Hunter's Association stories. All of Taylor's books are good reading and help to make the time between duck seasons pass a little faster.
