Summer Madness of the shower kind....

While some of you are fiddling with decoys, building boats, and Al Hansen is chasing whacko puppies I have been helping the son-in-law.

His dad passed away in March and now they are trying to settle up the estate and sell the house. The house had become a bit "frumpy" over the last few years so some touch up was in order: new paint, carpet, a bit of tile, a new vanity and so forth. Jared turned on the shower in the basement bathroom when he had finished installing a new vanity and floor tile and discovered that the adjoining rooms became "lakes". The shower pan was leaking. It was an old tiled shower with metal lath and concrete with a tar paper pan. We demolished the old shower and started over.

So on the 4th I was not out to the parades, fireworks and barbecues, but installing tile. I laid it out, Jared cut and the walls were started. Previously to the 4th we had built a new shower pan (felt, mud pack, metal lath, 40mil pvc liner, and more mud) and the walls were covered with Hardie Backer board with the wet areas coated with Redgard. The floor of the shower has also been tiled but in the photo it is covered with duct tape and card board.

The photo is from my phone so not the best.

Matt,
Isn't it a fun job in the heat? I know Jared appreciates the help! From what we can see in the photo, it looks like you got a great start.

We started a bathroom remodel on Friday. The really tricky part is that it's the only bathroom in the house. So far we have installed a closet, torn out the floors and rewired everything. Luckily we have a tub/show combo, so our tiling job will start a foot or so up the wall, but having never done tile before, I'm still a bit antsy about it. I keep telling myself "you've made tons of boats that kept water out, you can SURELY put in tile that keeps water IN" Hopefully that isn't just blind optimism! :)

Scott,

Private message me and I can direct you to a few websites that do an excellent job in describing the proper methods and materials for that shower surround. If you get stumped send pics and questions to my email (on my profile).

Lucky for Jared and I the bathroom is in the basement and the house has AC......less dripping of the forehead.

It seems that once in another life time having learned a few skills in the trades I get to help people out with projects and that is A-OK (worked for 30 plus years in the trades before I got out).

I have been working on a tile project myself in the bathroom...of the duck club clubhouse. Its going to be as nice as the spare bath at home. Wife is not real happy with the amount of effort going into this one with all the stuff she says I should be doing around the real house. It was really awful ,in fact some of the guys were saying they would rather take a dump at the bus station ,with a broken stall door, than at the clubhouse. Out with that avacado green. Bob

Bob,

Just get her involved and ask her to help select the tile etc, and then inform her that you think your house needs up dateing and this is a ''tile" run..oops trial run.. Just be prepared to follow up or you will be living in the duck club house hahaha!!

I like avocado green......sort of similar in color to the stuff the local dairy farmers spread....YUCKO!!

Good luck with the project.
