Restoring the TED SANFORD: A Benjamin Hallock Great South Bay Scooter

I will be giving a lecture at the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville on Sunday, January 25th - the last day of our duck season. So, if you limit out on the morning tide, the presentation will begin at 12:30. On the grounds of the Suffolk County Park, the entrance to LIMM is at 86 West Avenue, just up from the docks. I will have an hour-long (?) ppt - and the TED SANFORD will be on display right outside the entrance to the main building.

Steve

looks like another great show- are you still working on getting recorded versions of these presentations?

maybe some day you could do a how some place in the finger lakes-

Rick~

The Finger Lakes are an easy drive from here. If you can get me an interested audience, I'm sure something can be arranged.

Have not heard yet how the recording of my January 5 talk worked out.

All the best,

SJS

Hi Steve,

Passed the word around the bay this moring. I'll be there with my whole gang (the little ones etc.). That's a great museum with lot of great boats and inspiration.

Steve - you really help so many people with info and ideas. It looks like the SSWF is a great bunch and I wish I was closer. BTW, your website had some very helpful info on restoring black duck decoys. I don't carve and want to touch up some LL blacks and got just the info I needed.

THANKS !

Good morning, Dick~

It's good to see your photos again. As much as I like that Pintail, those hunkered-down Black Ducks caught my eye, too.

And, I'm glad the painting information is helpful to you.

All the best,

SJS

Hello Steve,
I was reading in the current issue of H&FC Magazine about the Long Island Decoy Collectors Association's Annual
Show. They Mentioned a Steve Sanford in the Article Is that you?

Tom

Tom~

"tis the very same! Craig Kessler (retired DU rep) and I have been working with a team since last spring to prepare a display called When the Broadbill was King on Great South Bay. Luckily, I "discovered" Anthony Babich on this site last winter. He has served as our very talented and creative videographer on the documentary movie of the same name. I will be posting announcements and teasers over the next few weeks - leasding up to the March 7 show. Right now, I need to pack up my laptop and head for the Maritime Museum.

All the best,

SJS

The lecture was interesting, the Steve talk you leave the lecture feeling you rebuilt the boat and hunted out of it for years.
What I find interesting is that I live 50 miles west on the same Island, the bay men from the western bays do not use Ice scooters.

Bill~

It was great to see you and all the other grizzled gunners and boaters.

I think Ice Scooters were never adopted "up west" because there is so much marsh and so much less deep open water. I think that, even with lots of ice around, one can always find a point near to "broadbill water" (i.e., NOT flats) to rig for them.

We're getting about a foot of snow today - and calling for 19 BELOW Thursday night.....

All the best,

SJS
