Just found another brand and model in my hunt for a boat to buy next spring:

Sylvan Super Snapper 1400

View attachment SylvanSuperSnapper1400.jpg

Has the size, open floor plan, storage, livewell, & hp rating I am looking for.
All rigged out too:
  • Navigation lights
  • Rod holders
  • Starboard side storage
  • 21 gal. port livewell
  • Treated floor w/Vinyl floor covering
  • Circuit breakers

Anyone have any opions on Sylvan? I have no experience with them at all.
I have seen there pontoons around here & there is a dealer about 35 miles away.
Any input would be appreciated!
God, waiting a year to buy is gonna kill me!

My sisters family has an 18' Sylvan. It has always seemed like a good boat and they have had it for more then 15 years. I would sure take a look at them.

Any boat that has hung in there for 15 years cant be half bad!
Thanks for the info.

Carl,
My initial take on the Sylvan, though I have not put my hands on one...........sides appear high enough but that low transom would be a deal breaker for me. Just MHO.
Lou

Why is that Lou?
Worried about following seas breaking over the back?
They come in a 15" and a 20" transom, I believe it is a 15' in the pic.
Do you like the 20" better?

Carl,

We see Sylvan boats here in Wisconsin regularly. Though I haven't owned one or even ridden in one my impression from seeing what used ones go for is that they are a mid level boat than one can get used a lot cheaper than a Lund or Alumacraft for example. One of the things I look at when evaluating an aluminum boat is the thickness of the hull. That Sylvan has a hull of 1/16th of an inch. Maybe that's normal for a 14 ' boat but it seems thin to my thinking.

Pete,

Thanks for the input!
Have you heard anything bad about them?
As far as hull thickness, the hull on the Sylvan is the same as the SeaNymph 1440 (riveted hull) I have been running for 10 years. We dont have to worry about rocks or many logs down here, just occasional oyster shell. I've gotten great service out of my SeaNymph and the hull is still in great shape.
The Lowe 1467 has a .072 hull, a little thicker but I still hate the HP rating on the Lowe!

Carl,

No, nothing bad. I think it's a good boat for what you pay for. It won't hold it's value as good as say a Lund or Alumacraft but they certainly are a decent boat. I wouldn't eliminate a boat from consideration because it was a Sylvan. If I were to give them a letter grade I would say - B.

I think Pete's grading system utilizes a fairly generous curve in that the Sea Nymph would get a B+ on his system in my opinion. But maybe that's because most of them were made about 3 blocks from my high school and across the street from best friend's house. I fondly recall the flat black panel "delivery" truck backing up to the loading dock and watching the springs bounce up and down as a "load" of migrant workers ran from the truck into the dark recesses of the plant to do....?
