Tango vs. Porcupine (NDR)

Last night my dog decided to stick his nose were it didn't belong. I'm not an expert on porcupine quills but these seem small. The quills measured about 1 - 1.5 inches long but were stuck in pretty good. I had to use a pliers to pull and ended up with 25 when finished. Tango won't be messing around with another porcupine any time soon.

Ouch. Hopefully he learned a lesson. Knock on wood, I've never had that happen to one of my dogs - skunks a plenty but not porkies.

From the looks of the number of quills I'd say he got off easy though I doubt he would think so.

Hope he heals quick.

I'm surprised a gray bearded Lab would go after a porky. Hope you got them all out and I wouldn't bet that he won't do it again..now he absolutely HATES porky-pines! I agree...looks like he got of pretty easy...must be quick.

I don't mean to laugh at your dogs plight yesterday BUT it brings back 100 different memories of dogs gone by and my present lab. He looks like he fared well compared to the other pic you posted. Sometimes only God knows what makes them tick.......

.....Speaking of ticks, I pulled a ton of them off of Rocko while walleye fishing last week.

Wow, lesson learned by the dog.
One thing to remember, as I've been told, is that porky quills are hollow and expand when heated by the body they are sticking in. The secret is to snip them (relieving pressure and air) and then push them through (since they are barbed). But then, I haven't had to deal with quills before except that I have used them for fly tying. :)

Lou your correct. When I was stationed in Minot our lab got a face full of quills fetching a bird in some cat tails. My friend a local pulled forcepts from his vest, cut the ends and pushed the quill in for the barb to relax then they would come right out. An asprin and all was well the next morning.

the dogs head? his nose? There's only one place that you can "push" a quill "through" and that would be the lip..and then you have both an entrance and an exit hole to deal with......

Porcupine quills are hollow and will crush when you grab them with either forceps or a pair of needle nose pliers and you definately want to be very careful not to break them off at the skin and leave them in but I can't imagine "pushing them through" anypart of a dog....be like removing a fish hook from a body part by shoving it the rest of the way through the part of the body where it is stuck.....I'll pass both on having it done and on doing it....

My first Lab was a Porcupine hater and never missed the opportunity to jump on one and never seemed to figure out the cause and effect of it.....funny how some will learn after the first time and others never do...interestingly he was exactly the opposite on skunks...sprayed lightly once he forever after that gave them a wide berth..

This is him during a "de-quilling" on a Quail hunt. probably 100 in the face nose and lips and another 100 or so inside the mouth which werre the scary ones..

By this point I was exhausted and he had just about chewed my thumb off which I had in his mouth to keep him from shoving the ones inside his mouth in deeper.....

Interestingly the ones inside the mouth were the easiest to remove since the skin didn't stretch out like the lips and jowels will do.....

This was many years ago and I'm certain that if that had been me with the quills in him I'd have shot anyone that tried to remove even one, much less "push it through" wherever it was stuck......

I figured we were done after this one but Thud just ate some snow, peed on the bloody spot in the snow, and started hunting again......

If you live in Porcupine country never go anywhere without a good pairs of needle nose pliers or forceps.....the quicker you remove them the better....

We never pushed em through, just a tad deeper to let the barb recess then they came right out. My lab looked just like yours but it only took one time. She would find one after that day, bark and jump around but never get close again
