TDB 14 Sea Class

What size water would you be comfortable using this boat in? Sounds, off shore sea ducks? Etc? What about conditions? 20 mph winds, etc...understanding it would just be a general thought.

Any thoughts to the difference between a Sea Class vs a Classic?

In my opinion a 14' is not the boat you want for sea duck hunting. Our 18' is marginal, you need leangth, beam and freeboard. I earn my living on the ocean and let me tell you 20kts of NW wind in January on the open ocean or sound is to much wind for a 14' or an 18' I'd go bigger if you have the opertunity

I agree with Jack. 14' TDB's are very small boats. They would be fine for coastal ponds or marshes, but they are not an ocean going vessel.

I have a 21' TDB and I still have to pick my days to go into the Atlantic in Dec. and Jan.

Don't get me wrong, they are great little boats, very stable, just a bit small if your looking to hunt 'big water' IMHO.

Good luck.

I have a classic that I've pushed well past reasonable limits. Short boat + big/rough waves= BAD The classic will stuff the bow in a heartbeat and following seas will roll right into the boat. Don't get me wrong, I love the boat. But respect it's limitations. I've NEVER been concerned about the boat going under. I've been concerned about swamping it and being tossed overboard (with the blind up). Things turn bad in a moment out there.

A sea class would be better... A bigger boat, even better yet. I have a 16' Starcraft as a bigger boat. That has it's limitations as well.

Best of luck. They seem to be a good boat but I wouldn't choose one as a primary sea duck boat. Marsh, river, bay, fair weather big water boat... That's what they're for.

I hunted for sea ducks out of my classic for 9 years......some scary stuff....never felt unsafe .I hunted LI Sound and Gardniers Bay in NY but deffinetly NOT the best boat to do it in.....too small and the bow is not designed to be at anchor in big waves.TDB 14 was/is a GREAT duck boat but not an ocean/nasty big water boat.IMO

Best of luck

The Sea Class is an entirely differnet boat than the Classic. I can't speak to what conditions you would feel safe hunting in it. But it is far more sea worthy than the Classic

I agree with Capt. Jack and Capt. Brian I do this for a living and yes you need to pick your days in a 21' Goliath on the Atlantic as well not an ocean going vessel at all.

Ryan - If you can test drive one you will have a better idea. Watch out for coastal rivers when the tide and wind oppose, particularly outgoing against an onshore wind. I hunted out of a 14 classic for several years and stuffed the bow once - that was enough. In a following sea you need to go slow and hang back on a wave - not sure if the sea class behaves differently but listen to the guys who are out there all the time. The ocean in winter is no place for a mistake.

I have the 14SC but haven't brought it into LIS yet. I have had it in our tidal rivers, but in nothing more than a slight chop.
