teal decoy size

I'm working on a pattern for a GWT, and just want to make sure I'm close on the size. Does anyone have a decoy, or pattern of a decoy, or a mount that they could measure? Even the measurement of a plastic would be fine. I'd like to know the length from the front of the breast to the tip of the tail.

Thanks
Chuck

according to the Pat Godin book

4 1/2 wide
9 1/4 long
3 tall

All in inches give or take a little

Chuck:
Just a small note, Godin's patterns are geared more toward decorative carvers, so the measurements are life like. For a gunning block, you might want to increase the overall size by %10-%15 and then give it a bit more width for stability.

Good luck!

I have some life-size teal and they are too tiny for my tastes. I would rather put out a block that can be seen easier. No more work to put a bigger one, within reason.

But then at a certain point, they start looking weird (in hand). A friend is carving a GW at %+20 over, it looks like it's on steroids! But then it'll probably look good on the water....

Thanks Bob. Do you have a closer picture of that teal...your pictures are always inspiring!

Last year I picked up a half dozen Avery Outdoor teal. Bodies are 9" long, 5" wide and 2 1/2 thick.

My preference in decoys has changed. I have a bunch of oversized cork bodied decoys I seldom use anymore. I prefer smaller & lighter. I just don't think the ducks care all that much. I also think they can see the smaller decoys just fine from the air. One of these years I'm going top alter the weights on all my decoys so they right themselves no matter how I throw them out.
