I'd mentioned it earlier in a post.....here's a rig of 8 teal we just did for a fella. Gary Hanson painted these for me...and....I had him do an extra so I'd have one for my shelf. ;)
Gary will be competing in the pool and IWCA at Westlake. Gary also carved our Mag. Buffy Squat & Super Mag. Oldsquaw/Harlequin. Ya know, this is way too much fun. I love my job.

Yes, we use texturing paste (Goldens Regular Gel Matte) and a comb. On the rest of the bird (except the bill) we use the gel and a sponge to get a nice soft pebbly texture. Often, after the gel has dried (force dried with a hair dryer) we'll just hit the combing with some sandpaper to flatten the top of the ridges and it takes dry brushing better and more definitively.

Beautiful! Those are some clean gunners.

Thanks Bob, much appreciated. I just finished making the weighted keels, packing them up and shipping to the fella in Vermont. They are on their way to the water. ;)

p.s. you coming to Westlake?

Nice work Lou. Question though. What is the criteria for deciding whether to use either Goldens or FME?

See you in a few days!

If using the FME, you do not have to blend/match colors as we've done that for you already. Use right out of the can. I've done hundreds of birds with the FME as well as bunch of boats. Downside, it's slower drying and you have the smell of thinner....in the house if that's where you are painting.

I sometimes base coat still with the FME.

Primarily though, the majority of my painting is done with the Goldens Matte. I've learned to match paints so that's not an issue any more. It's quick and can be dried with a hair dryer.......fast. We can teach a class and paint a bird complete in one day. I like the "system" approach with the Goldens and everything they produce.

Both Goldens and FME hold up well though the FME will scuff a bit easier as it's "dead flat". Spray with dull coat and you're .... in like Flint.
I find the Goldens more versatile for my painting needs both personal, teaching and painting for customers.
Another huge advantage....goldens is waterproof as soon as it dries. Thus, you can carry it right from your room after finishing the paint work and drop it right into the pool at Westlake.....yup, it's been done. Also, when painting, dry the paint and then if you make a mistake when doing the next layer...merely wipe it off with damp cloth and continue painting without taking off the previous coat.
See ya at the show.
Lou
