Been awhile without posting, just lurking. No duck hunting so I have to live vicariously through all your hunting stories.

My son has been keeping me busy chasing pheasants with our chessie, Chance. Hopefully if the duck gods let us, we will try for our first duck hunt this weekend.

I have pictures but haven't been able to resize them down below the allowed limit on my Mac..... But I'll figure it out soon.

Keep the stories coming,

Thanks

Jack.. if you need help resizing photos, email them to me... I will PM you my email address. I would be glad to lower the resolution on them and email them back so you can post... My profession is digital photography & graphic design, so a little work in photoshop is no big deal for me....

Where are you chasing pheasants here on the island? Tough to find a decent place to hunt unless you join a club or go to a preserve. I live in Ridge and work in Southampton....

Well guys I think I figure out how to resize the picture from a Mac. Thanks for the help.

As I mentioned earlier, my son and I have been trying our luck on pheasants at a NYSDEC land out here on Long Island where they release pheasants over a very large parcel of land.

Noah, my oldest son turned 12 and is allowed to hunt with me so we hit the Coops (local name) with Chance my 3 year old Chessie. Some may remember I had issues with him and feathers ( we've resolved those issues).

The morning was cool but would be hitting the 60 degree mark by midday so I told Noah it'll be a short hunt because I hate ticks and warm weather brings them out.

I spent most of the time asking him "is your safety on?" and he was being very cautious since I've drilled it into his head, "I don't care if the bird flies and you forget to take off the safety but I do care if you don't have the safety on before you shoulder that gun" He got the point.

The dog is a great indicator of something is close, get ready. I've learned NOT to doubt his nose.

Chance got on a bird after about 30 minutes into the hunt, a hen busted up but was moving out further then Noah was comfortable to take, so I dropped her and Chance brought her to me.

Noah, was impressed with the one shot but I really wanted him to take a bird.

Chance was right back to work and within 20 minutes of flushing a hen he put 2 more birds up. However, no shots were presented.

I figure lets go look for those birds so, I tried to get Chance to move into the direction I saw the birds. However Chance wasn't done, he got real birdie. I told Noah, get ready and get close to Chance because he's about to flush something.

I did see the rooster running, and so did Chance he put the rooster up about 20 yards in front of Noah and two shots later Noah downed his first pheasant.

Although Chance brings the birds back to me he dropped this one about 5 feet from Noah. Here's Noah picking up is bird which had a little bit left in him.

He actually put his gun down, safety on and was grinning ear to ear. He found 1 of his 2 spent cases, and saved them (typical kid)

We hunted for about another 30 minutes before the warmer air started to make it's presence so I mentioned to Noah "we could go after those two birds and continue hunting. We are allowed 4 each... but I'll leave it up to you"

He was fine with his take, we had about a 20 minute walk back to the truck but found a post to place the camera on to take this shot, notice Chance is even smiling.

We stopped off for Mickey D's and sat at the check station eating lunch. Normally Chance doesn't get fries but Noah had asked if it was ok, I said pic the longest fry you have...

We will try for ducks this weekend, Noah is excited....
I'll post the pictures because I'm getting better at remembering the camera.

Best,

Thanks for the story that went along with those pictures, Jack. Congratulations, Noah, on that first pheasant. Sure hope the two of you do well with your upcoming duck hunt. I'll look forward to hearing about it and maybe seeing some more pics.
