The boy got his first bird and it was a goose!

Well, my son and I got out for a Youth Waterfowl hunt this morning. We managed to be in a great spot and had several teal fly through. Too bad they were a little early and he hadn't loaded his gun yet. A couple of more came through as it was getting lighter, but someone got the jitters and moved a little too much. Next thing we knew, geese were taking off in groups of about 10-15 birds from just a field or so away. They flew right over our spot. I was able to keep my son calm and he picked a bird. One shot and this goose fell down into the water hard. It was great!

The dog made a great retrieve and put smiles on both of our faces. Later, we did some scouting for the full season to open next weekend. We found a great spot. Just hoping all the ducks and geese decide to do the same thing next Saturday.

Sounds like a great start. Congrats to your son for making a clean kill. I am guessing that by now, all his earthly friends are aware of his accomplishment. :>)

Thanks for sharing your son's hunt with us.

Nothing could be better than having a son put down his first goose and dad with a huge smile on his face. Glad you had such a great day. Good luck to both of you next week when the regular season begins for both of you. I, for one, will look forward to more pictures. I hope that spot you found will be a producing one.

Thanks guys, this was one of those memories that we will hopefully never forget. We chased ducks all last year without him connecting. Lots of being behind on his shots. This goose gave him a great opportunity to be successful and start the year off on a high note.

Still smiling just thinking about it.
