Saturday was a bit of a show for us. We had a school event friday night and were up late with preparations for the morning including a bit of work on the trailer.
Needless to say when the alarm went it got turned off somehow. When I realized that someone had turned it off we were an hour late.
Oh well, time to make the most of it. Off we rolled and put the boat in just as legal was starting. It was a great run to the spot, including some very nice hides by the guys who got up on time. My apologies for thinking a few were a real flock of ducks till seeing the spinner. Keep moving to the next X.
We set up a quick pocket and got in the brush at spot three. John took up his place in the Sanford box in his sleeping bag even though it wasn't that cold. He must have been out because I couldn't get him to answer me when I saw the Osprey. He hooked right over and landed in the tree. Neat to see, and when John peaked out to take a look he took off.
The ducks were few and the ones we saw were high and moving. A few guys up river from us took a shot or 9 with the Novas at a nice group that set in.
It was looking like it might be a Skunk for us, when around the corner a pair of coots make their way in. Now I have a very wide range on the pallet but I wasn't sure about coot. But I remembered Brian's secret about the bacon and the dog was just about coming unglued, so it was game on.
Two nice retrieves later we were in the running for coot stew.
As we were getting ready to pack it in we waved down an old friend from the early days of the site. He had a few of his original decoys. The pictures of them on this site helped get me started carving. He also introduced me to the breeder of my dog Scout.
The dogs had a meet and greet and we talked about the blue bird weather and the season to come.
Ran back to the trucks together and then headed home for chores.
Scout is doing well retrieving this season and has a few mallards, two coots and a squirrel to his credit.
Looking to add to the list this weekend.
Short on pictures again as I keep leaving the camera in the truck.
