The magic of a pup.

Some of you may have followed to quest of George Calef to hunt as many NA species of game birds over one dog as time would allow. He and his Lab , Heidi Brown, did pretty good before she died about a year ago.

It was a quest the two of them worked on for over a decade, and when she died I wasn't sure George would get another dog. But he did, and last night he and I went out for a duck shoot over an oxbow off the Takhini River with her and my 7 yr old Lab, Jennifer Becotte. The pup is 9 months right now and she did great for a young dog. George wanted her to learn that not everything that falls is hers, so Jenny got two retrieves before we sent the pup on sailer that went into the spruce trees.

Those of us that have had the pleasure of hunting over a good dog for 10 years or more know what an adjustment it is to start over with a new dog, but it was great to see George "back in action" working with the newbie. The guy knows dogs.

Two things that haven't changed for me since I was a teenager - I want a 4x4 that can go anywhere and a dog that picks up everything I drop. I am a simple man.

An if you can have both at the same time.

Pete, that was a simple request. I really liked that.

I love a good dog story. Heidi Brown sure sounded like a rare one. Would have liked to see a list of all the game birds she retrieved on his blog.

MLBob is right, the problem is we outlive our dogs.

I hope his new pup brings as much joy as Heidi Brown and serves him well.

I know, there must be a list recorded somewhere. When I try to find articles George has written I get partial excepts from magazines. I did find this one picture page that's kinda cool.

What I like about George is that he accepts that a dog is not a machine. They are a pain sometimes, but worth it to those of us who enjoy their company. In my experience, if you want a dog that thinks for herself when you need it you've got to be willing to let her make some mistakes too. Like when she's tired and cold from fetching up a bunch of ducks and decides to bring in two at a time.

That being said, after 3 close encounters with porcupines in the last couple of weeks Bunners got a little too close to one at the boat launch last night, and now has had this experience.
