The Politics of Duck hunting

Dani- I like your Data Analysis. I find it kind of ironic since I'm teaching Data Analysis and significant Figures right now to my students. I never thought about using the HIP survey for a real world appliction word problem. I might just use your information for resource management and Global prespectives project. Thanks

On a side note- I under stand your "enthusiasm" about getting the proper data. I think its a scientist thing, keep up the good fight.

Tod-

Trying to "squrim out"? How do you figure that refusing to accept 20 year old "non-peer reviewed" numbers for Mexico as compared to present day numbers for the U.S. is "squirming out"? You're a Sceintist Tod. I doubt very seriously that if someone said that the population of Spruce Budworms in a study area was "XXXXXX" and those numbers came from asking the Rural Postal force and the local arborist and was then adjusted for "under-estimation" and then that data was being compared to current "scientifically gathered and vetted information" that you'd accept that as "valid" data.

That said, I wasn't trying to "do it for you" and could care less if "after the fact does it for you."

I missed ya bud, too bad ya quit the forum. Hope life is treating you well.

Again you refer to 20 year old information, do you live under a rock. Why don't you look at information edited by Ducks Unlimited. Even you cannot dispute there facts. Keep on reading, one day you will get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In VA those in depth conversations with residents are called interfering with a lawful hunt.

Sounds like a real pain Erik. I ran into a park ranger once here in Maryland and she asked me if I was one of the duck hunters from the group. I said, no I was with a Cub Scout group. I asked about the duck hunter and she said that there were three blinds on the river in this area and they were controlled by the state park. It is very hard to find access to this area of the river and I was very interested. I asked her how I could sign up for the blinds figuring it was a lottery of some sort but she laughed at me and said that the blinds are auctioned every year. I asked how much that usually costs and she said about $5000. I almost fell down. The duck hunting isnt that good and that part of the river has alot of freeze up in the late seasons. I was pretty pissed and asked her how the state got away with auctioning them off. All that does is let the wealthy utilize PUBLIC PROPERTY! I asked her if people had to pay to use the jogging trails, the R/C plane fields, to walk their dogs, etc and she said "no". What a crock of crap. Next they will be auctioning off dove fields that produce 10 birds per season!

What's sad is that if they charged a nominal daily fee and let out those blinds through a lottery system through the season, they could probably get just as much revenue for the park, have a lot more folks hunting, and open up a public amenity to members of the public who can't afford a $5,000 annual lease.

The whole idea of leasing a blind or blind site on public land is odd. I guess that's why I'll be out on Monday rubbing shoulders with the teeming masses on our opener. :)

This thread has been interesting and really makes me glad that I live where I do.
I can put up a blind almost anywhere I want and not have a problem. I was out this past Monday laying down tracks and points on the new GPS for the up coming season. I covered 23 miles marked over a dozen spots and did not pass the same place twice. Best of all is it does not cost me anything but time and materials. I just hope it stays this way.

Me and you both, love the gsb. I hunt 50+ days out of a 60 day season where ever I want.

Once you get your law degree you are able to figure out the "easy" regulations that the state of Matyland has provided for waterfowlers. I truly miss the days in Illinois and Missouri where I could just GO hunting. Missouri had some easy walk in lakes that had no restrictions other than some common sense and safe spacing. There were no taking a day off work to get to the court house at 6am, to stand in line, to get your number randomly called, to wait around for hours to have 8 minutes to pick your TWO blind sites and hand over your $20 fee....per site! All your prior scouting and work to locate some prime real estate goes out the window when you sit down and find out that the areas you had scouted are already sited by state, government, private, or the other guys selected before you in the drawing. I'm just venting.....I know there is a better way to do this, I'm just not sure I have figured it out yet. Plenty of other states have easy access, I think the states need to talk to each other and come up with a better solution. People who have access to "continuous shoreline" can blind site ALL blinds on that shoreline for $20 while all others have to spend $20 for EACH blind site they can scrounge up. I went in with 8 other guys this year to form a "team" to help our odds. We did fair, but I would have hated to be standing in that line by myself. Going as a group at least gives you more access to more sites.

Tod-

REALLY???? That's your response to MY questions? Saying hi to a "friend" that you could contact through email if you wanted to know how life was treating them, because you think they're posting through ME???? Like I can't think and respond for myself?

Dani

Dani

I recently contacted a friend asking how life was going and gave them a snapshot of what's been going on with me. Never heard back.

No, actually I do not live under a rock, I live in a concrete block house, but I didn't think that had anything to do with being very good with internet searches.

Clearly, you have "something" that I haven't been able to find, and I have looked for more current information. So feel free to post this "data" that you found so that I can "keep on reading."

Dani,
I think you are at least looking at the data critically, not just accepting the what is handed to you. I can tell you almost every day in my field we are confronted with older data that may be true or not, and almost every time, someone says "gee that is too old therefore it can't be true" or some other statement. In the end, if it is beyond 5 years someone will always call BS or just hedge their decisions. Tod patronizing you and essentially calling you stupid is not a great arguement.

Whether you are right or not is immaterial to me on this one, I just like to see the bantering and trying to use some logic.

good day.

Oh, Erik, sure sounds like a battle, keep up the fight and push them, otherwise eventually they will shut it all down.

This is why politics and hunting shouldn't be used in the same sentence. I can't even figure out what this post is really about???

Like Ron White would say ..........maybe it's me?

REALLY? That's surprising. I know he'd like to hear from you and I can't imagine him not responding to an email. What address did you use?

Dani

Politics=Money. Unless you have the money to fight these rules and bans, its a no win situation. I've got a tidal waterway that the TOWNSHIP designated as a wildlife safety zone, even though there are plenty of areas a safe distance from the park. I don't have the money to fight them in court, so I don't hunt there. I want too, hell its right near my house, but these anti-hippie freaks got more money than they know what to do with. Eric- I think in certain situations that "old data" may be just as valid (assuming of course that it was when it was presented) today as when it was then. I'd just want it proven to me that it is and I'm more than willing to accept it. Hey, I can enjoy a good debate. I always learn something from them, even if I'm not participating in them because I tend to want to know more so I will start researching a topic on my own. It keeps me "reading" more so that someday I can "get it." Dani
