The Wave!

Did you see the band on that one bird.....?

Totally awesome pics.....

Steve

Steve, you got me laughing on that one. Wouldn't you like to know how many were banded? I would.
Believe it or not, but this was a mated pair that landed right in front of me when the massive cloud finally came back and decided to rest for a while.

Great pics as always. I saw some of those birds today. I also saw a Golden Eagle about 10 miles south of Socorro feeding on a road kill deer on the I-25 median - very look look too.

Thanks, T. Hope you are having fun. Was it this buck. He and two does were heading west in that direction and were only three miles from I-25 when I took the pic around 9AM.f They are in rut now.

Thanks Al for those great shots. We get huge numbers together (with geese) like that in Oregon but they never let you get that close. You must have ran up on them really fast - awesome!

Rick,
I was sitting on my folding chair and the birds landed within 20 feet of me. While I was there by myself, some of the snows and Ross geese swam to the shoreline, then began walking towards me. That didn't last long because more photographers could see that from the highway and they came over where I was.
Every year it is this way with these geese. Very tame but yet when they fly out of the refuge they get blasted at----even by me.

Wow, very cool shots Al!

I can't believe snows let you get that close to them!

Like I told Rick, these geese are extremely tame. There are literally thousands of photographers who come here each year from all over the world just to take their pictures. The birds, including sandhill cranes, which are normally pretty cautious, also will allow you quite close. Glad you liked the pics, Brian.

Hi Al,

Nice shots.
Very few snows in Utah, near Delta Utah they have maybe 10,000 - 15,000 that show up in the spring for a week or two. There is a week long hunt for them. The local farmers have trouble with them so they opened that short season in hopes of moving them along and away from the winter wheat and freshly drilled fields.

The farmers have a different opinion concerning the "Wave"..

Al - I tell you - I think these geese are alot more smart than we give them credit for. I can walk up pretty close and the sentry's will make some noise but slowly get the flock moving but if I'm carrying my shotgun - they get the flock out of there like their butts are on fire. They seem to know if their going to get shot at. You got me thinking about getting a new camera for some better pictures - Thanks
