They changed our opener!

I just found out that north of 62' which is about 1 1/2 drive from my house the opening day will be Aug 15th this year! I AM STOKED! That means I can hunt ducks when we go up for caribou in Aug again this year. There was a tufted duck hanging out in a slough near where we camped, I wonder if he'll be back there again...

Probably the best chance I'll ever get at a summer plummage OS.

Is this the regular season or First Nation's season? The reason I ask is that the Migratory Bird Convention (Treaty) between US and Canada prohibits sport hunting between March 10 and August 31st.

I just looked up the regs and see that hunting between Aug. 15 and September 1 is for Yukon residents only.

I questioned it too for the same reason Brad, but it seems they changed it anyways. THe US and Mexico woudl have to agree to that right? When I tried to get a spring season for ducks up here years ago they told me it was impossible to change to accomodate dates between March 10 and Sept 1 like you said. Can you post the link you found?

FUnny they said Yukon residents only. I wonder why?

Thanks Brad, it looks like it did start last year. Funny no one knew that. I was at a meeting last night with all the big mucky mucks of the migratory bird world up here and the only one that knew of the opener change was the CWS enforcement guy.

I also noted it said we get 1 hr pre and post sunrise/sunset which has been unclear in the past. Most jurisdictions I know of in Canada are 1/2 hr on either end. That is pretty much "can't see" to "can't see" for us. Definately not picking drakes in that low of light. They are all in eclipse anyways. What about the States? Are most 1/2 hr before and after?

And why wouldn't we extend it to non residents. NO ONE ever comes North to shoot ducks when they have to get past Alberta to get here!

Thanks for the link,

Mike

We get 1/2 hour before light (maybe only 20 I can never remember just look in the book before heading out) but not after for migratory birds. At sunset you are done. It kind of sucks because most afternoon hunts end with me picking up decoys as birds are trying to land in them. Deer and small game is a 1/2 afterwards sunset though.

I'll guarantee that if we had and hour before we would still have people shooting 5 to 10 minutes early.
I can sort of see that for you on those august days. During the summer twilight seems to last forever here can't imagine what it's like that far north.

Tim,
In Alaska, years ago they had a rule that a hunter had to wait until the next day to take a trophy, like a Dall sheep or grizzly, if taken in by a plane to hunt. They quickly found out that sheep hunters were being flown in the evening up in the Brooks Range, then having to wait until 12:01AM to pull the trigger or when they had sufficient light. That law was quickly changed!
