Went out and scouted a few places yesterday and one held quite a few ducks. Got up early and was excited about the morning. Awoke to a light snow falling, below freezing temperatures and a nice strong wind. Loaded up the pickup with the Poke boat and off I went. This particular place is ways out on its own and at the end of a dead end road there is a tiny landing that is barely useable. Got there and there were already two trucks, one with an empty trailer. Bummer. Walked a little ways through the woods and shined my spotlight down the channel. No reply. Things were looking up. Loaded up and a paddling I went. Threw out my 7 decoys and realized I had forgotten my chair. Big bummer. Was sitting on shore waiting for legal and down the channel comes another light. I shine my location to let him know where I was. He keeps coming. Pulls up next to me and says the blind is so and so's. I said a buddy asked the owner if I could hunt it and I got permission (blind sits in the water on posts and in WI you can't own a blind in the water). I ask the guy if he wants to join me as I'd enjoy the company. He comes on over. Throws out a few more dekes and a couple Canada decoys as well and we were ready to hunt.
At about 10 minutes before legal waves of ducks started coming in (hundreds of ducks in the air all around us). I haven't seen this in a very long time and it was one of those epic mornings I just don't see around here anymore. We shot everything but the kitchen sink including a pure black duck that I haven't shot in a very long time. Teal, Widgeon, Gadwall, Ring Bill, mallards and geese filled the bag in no time so we just sat and watched the ducks continue to fly around.
Ended up hunting with a genuinely nice person and had a hunt that will be remembered for a long time. My new buddy was quite the hunter who has lived in some pretty decent hunting locations. Had a lanyard filled with bands from all over.
At the end of the hunt I asked if he wanted all the ducks. (his first time out, he LOVES ducks, and he didn't think he would be getting out anytime during the remaining 11 days or so of the season) I already have enough ducks, so he took them all home for his family to eat. Good deal.
I'm staying over at the cabin and hunting again tomorrow and probably on Monday as well. Even got the Okey Dokey from Diane so I'm golden. Can't wait till tomorrow.
Took a couple of pics for a buddy to see but not worth posting here as we have all seen enough tailgate shots. I'll take some better shots tomorrow and post them up ducks or no ducks.
What a day.
