Oh:

It is -40 and droping tonight.

To be in SW Mi. Near WMU, Domino Med. Double Crust, Double Cheese, Sausage, Mushroom, Green Pepers, and Onion, washed down with a Quart of Detroit Swamp Water (Sthohs), and get to carve TOO...

Sounds good to me but only for a visit. I really don't want to go home any more...

AK is home. I can float hunt all the rivers, up here.

With two weeks under our belt, it looks like this is starting to gain some momentum. I'm sure all that have attended will agree its a good way to spend a cold evening in a warm shop. We will be going again this Thursday, starting at 6pm. Hope to see you here! This is a kid friendly event too if you want to bring a youngster.

We are still going with this and it's building momentum! We will be meeting at 6pm, Thursday January 31 again. The Doc is working on another special presentation that you wont want to miss. We also have a few new people coming to join the fray. Look forward to seeing everyone there!

OOPS... Haven't updated in a while, but we will be carving this Thursday February 21 at 6pm. I'll have Hot Chocholate and hot cider. Dress warm, bring something to whittle on. The earlier you come the closer to the stove you can sit!

Yes, We are carving this Thursday, the 28th. I will have hot water and thats about it. I had a 8 teenagers over carving pike spearing decoys tonight and they went through the whole box of hot chocolate and cider. 6pm just like always.

Paul, do you want to pick and post-up another Saturday date for carving? After Easter or early April?

Best,
Brian F.

We will be carving again this Thursday March 6. We have been gaining some momentum and have had 15 guys the last two weeks and expect to still grow. Stop by and meet some talented carvers and bullshitters. Dress warm as I'm running low on firewood. The earlier you arrive the closer you can sit to the stove.

For those of you that missed out Thursday night on the gumbo, story telling and carving enjoy.

Paul said we're on for next week Thursday the 13th. See you there.

Newest member of the Thursday night carvers guild Chris (I'm not even going to try spelling the last name, Sorry) came all the way from Houghton Lake.

Paul will need to explain this one.

Thanks for posting the pics Bryan, and Thanks for making the trip Chris! You are the current record holder for longest distance traveled. Nice work on the merg! Had a great time tonite, and Bryan showed up with some world class goose gumbo. The cookies from Chirs hit the spot, and Daves firewood kept us warm.

The last picture is me and the doc. The book I'm holding is a book Doc and his wife wrote about fishing around the great lakes. Its thicker than any phone book I have, and I cant wait to get reading it. We'll see y'all next week!

I was just reading your post and noticed it said that Chris was from Houghton Lake. In the latest issue of Decoy Magazine there's an article about a carver from the early 1900's named Frank Baumgardner who was from Houghton Lake. He owed a small resort called the Anchor Inn on southern central part of the lake. The resort only consisted of his house a boat house and three small cottages. What caught my eye was a picture of a bunch of row boats(15-20) being tow by a small tug boat. For 50 cents the tug boat would tow you out to your hired blind. When you rented one of Mr. Baumgardners cottages it would include a blind ,two dozen of his decoys and a tow boat ride, it was a petty cool article.

Hey Chris,

If I'd known that you were from Houghton Lake, we could've shot the breeze about family. See, my wife is a Wallington and her grandfather and the rest of the Wallington/Kelly clan is in Houghton Lake. We really miss Delbert. He pasted away this winter. He worked for the road commission for over 30 years driving heavy equipment. Small world, huh? I hope we can catch up at the next carving night. Your merganser was looking good. I'll be there for sure because the on the 20th I be in the hospital to see my second kid into our small world:)

Watch you fingers,

Dave

I had a great time Thursday night, well worth the drive. I learned quite a bit just from watching you guys. Thanks again for the wood Paul, my skills will need to improve before I begin hacking that piece of Basswood though. Have a great time at Westlake next week and hope you feel better soon.

Phil, I'd like to see that article. I have a similar postcard somewhere showing a long train of fishermen being pulled out to the middle grounds in old wooden rowboats. I believe it was from Korbinski's Resort which is still there.

Dave, I knew a Gene Wallington, he worked on our well at the family cottage and I had heard of Delbert.

Hope to make it back soon but with these damn gas prices I'll have to start saving my pennies. (Went from $3.07 Saturday morning to $3.36 when I got home in the evening)
Take care,

Chris

P.S.
Paul, that's really cool the way you're helping the kids!

Chris: That post card you described sounds like the picture in the magazine but they said it was bringing hunters out to their blinds, who knows ,I guess it could of been both depending on the season. The magazines web site has fallen behind they're still reviewing the Sep.- Oct. issue. so is the magazine it self , the issue I got last week was Nov.- Dec 2007. They don't put every article from the magazine on the web site either so I don't know if it will be there. But you can call them up and order the one issue(nov-dec 2007) for $8.00 (Tel#302-644-9001). It's a 4 page article called Doc's Flock by Riock Wyczalek, It has several pictures of the decoys he carved plus others. If you've never seen the magazine before I think you would like it. Or if your going down to Westlake this year for the decoy show I wouldn't be surprised if the editor not there pushing his magazine and he always has back issues with him.

Just a little whittlin' going on.

Paul,

I decided to join up on this forum and couldn't help but say "hello"!! Sounds like you all are taking decoy making to a new social high. Perhaps you could name your shop the "Holden Creek Gun Club and Cultural Center--North Campus". Sounds like a great time and a wonderful way to meet like-minded folks. You need to get everyone together and road trip down here for a couple days of carving, gunning and yarn spinnin' next hunting season.

Thanks for posting the pics Bryan. I wish I had remembered my needle and thread last night, that would have taken the Rutger's Institute to a new high...or would that be low...well anyway, we would have been off on a tangent...wait, half the people were working on turkey calls last night, the last thing that group needs is another tangent.

Chuck
