So I'm now seeing new regulations being propsoed in Colorado to limit gun ownership and I got to thinking which is never a good thing. Some of the things I'm reading:
1. I believe it it Washington State that wants to make gun ownership dependent upon registration with the State. And then, to renew your registration, you need to allow someone into your home to make sure you are storing it or whatever acccording to the newly enacted laws. Doesn't this also infringe upon the 4th amendment against unlawful searches and seizures? I thought the governement needed a search warrant to enter your home withour permission. Looks like we can throw that one out the door as well
2. School kids not being allowed to draw a picture of a gun nor mention a gun in any conversations without penalty. Doesn't this go against the first amendments guarantee of free speech? Just mentioning guns get you in trouble. You've got to be kidding me.
3. I've also read that in some of the newly proposed regulations to keep us safe, if you don't abide by these new laws, your guns will be taken away from you. Doesn't this violate the 5th amendment's promise of property not being taken from you without just compensation?
And a couple of other points. I am sick and tired of being villified because I hunt and own a gun. All these stories, new proposed regulations and so on make a gun owner a criminal by equating us to those who have committed the recent school and theater shootings. If you own a gun, it is now being assumed that you are just as bad as those who have masacred a bunch of kids.
Where's the story about the killer of the little girl in Chicago being caught three times prior to for violation of various gun laws. Why wasn't he in jail or prison where he belonged? Let's tell the real story, not the one that fits the agenda of the current administration.
And finally, what happened to being innocent until proven guilty? Say you are driving down the road and get pulled over for speeding. Cop comes to your window and sees a legally transported gun in the back seat. It gets put into the police report. You go to a judge to say you weren't going that fast. First thing a judge reads, or a jury hears, is that you had a gun in the backseat. Has nothing to do with speeding but you can be sure it will be brought up to help win their case.
Anyway, maybe a bit overboard but this is much bigger than just the right to keep and bear arms. What are you doing to help protect the freedoms we have been promiseed in our constitution? It's going to take more than writing a check to the NRA in my opinion.
