Thoughts and Prayers Please

Thoughts and Prayers Please for the people of the Red River Valley

Some of you may remember April of 1997 when East Grand Forks, MN and Grand Forks, ND were covered with water when the dikes protecting our communities were breeched. We have built bigger and better dikes and flood walls and look to be ok with the current forecast in Grand Forks. Now the same cannot be said for Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN. They are looking down at a ticking clock in a race to fill millions of sand bags before this Friday. March rains have melted the snow faster than normal and caused the rivers to rise about 3-4 weeks before usual. The forecast was raised a additional two feet yesterday in Fargo due to those rains.

Here are a couple NP articles if you are interested in what is going on. All I ask is for a thought or prayer.

It's a terrible situation for those involved, no doubt.

Is anyone discussing the cause of the flooding? Is there any discussion of restoring any of the wetlands in the Red River Valley that would have mitigated / prevented this sort of thing?

Wetlands, they're more than just duck factories.

Bless you and all the other volunteers.

The water is about 5' higher right now and will come up another 10' in the next 3-4 days.

If you look at the last photo the water should crest about the bottom of that bridge.

these photos were taken 2 days ago from down town East Grand Forks. yesterday we got a half inch of rain
followed by 10" to a foot of snow.

Once again please keep the folks in Fargo Moorhead in your thoughts and prayers. they are seriously hurting
and so far are keeping a head of the rising water.
here are a couple upto date stories on wht is going on around here

Matt,

The folks here in Iowa know all too well what our Midwestern brothers are up against and what a long, painful recovery this will probably turn into....

Prayers on the way....

Jeff

Aren't you on the wrong side of the tracks there?

Is the bridge for the street in front of cabelas still above the water level?

This is from the top of a building across the street from Cabelas. That is the bridge for the street that runs in front of Cabelas.

Wow! It has been about 19 years since I've been to Grand Forks. I lived in Crookston for a year. I crossed that bridge a number of times. There is a lot of flat land that feeds the Red River.

Thanks for sharing,

Tom
