throttle plate hits shift block

I replaced the water pump on an older model 15hp Johnson. Upon doing so I removed the shift linkage from the brass block and now I'm having a problem with the throttle plate hitting the shift block.
My question is....
Is there a trick on aligning the linkage or positioning the throttle as so when all together the shift lever goes forward enough so the throttle plate doesn't hit the shift block inside the motor cover.
thanks any help is greatly appreciated.

Jay,

You lost me at throttle plate, typically what is referred to as a throttle plate is inside the throat of the carburetor.

So, what year and model and I'll look up a schematic.
Take a picture of the problem so I/ we can look at the interfering pieces.

If the following illustration is like your particular model, then # 49 is the only place the shifter linkage needs to be disconnected when servicing the water pump.
