Tiller Extension Suggestions

Hello, been spending some time reading through the site and have found tons of useful information. I run a 14' Classic TDB with a 25 hp Merc and was wondering what brand tiller extension you guys like. I haven't seen a huge selection of them and figured someone here would know what stands up to the many abuses of duck hunting.

Thanks, pat

I made one out of a short piece of PVC pipe, just wrapped a little tape on the tiller handle to take up the slack

Got one from west marine but was to flimsey so I JB welded the crap out of it and ran a 3/4 wooden dowl down the center now its nice and strong

Here's a couple of photos of the PVC extension I made. With an inside diameter selected to be a bit too tight, I then used my chop saw to slice the end into sections that would allow it to expand when pushed on to the tiller handle. A clamp was used to make it more permament. However, having the ability to take it off easily was necessary and I no longer use the pipe clamp. Using "camo" duct tape, any needed expansion with a tight fit was possible. Friction (by jamming it on) keeps the extension in place.

I always remove it when trailering.

Aluminum tubing works well too. I sprayed mine with rocker panel spray to give it a little texture. Made it easier to hold on to when wet / cold.

I found that a long (enough) extension on my 6 hp Johnson put the grip end too far off centre to make right turns. My solution was a section of corrugated radiator hose clamped onto the tiller, then a pvc and wooden extension. It let me bend the tiller extension as necessary but still keep control.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I figured making one would be the way to go as everything I saw looked chincy. Thanks again.

I also have a merc outboard i use a surf fishing sand spike. it is plastic and fits mercury small outboards perfect and only cost 5 bucks.

I also use one on my 50merc. I make my living on the water and use surf fishing spike on my 50hp with zero problems. Its what ever fits your need the ones i use are about 36 inches long.
