Tire chain expertise, especially highway use...

A worm? Isn't that for someone that would use a spinning wing decoy? ;) A flyrod is a requirement! :)


I prefer a spinner or spoon over a worm, but I am travelling with a 5 year old kid and my concern is that he has a good time. I will point out that the worm is by far the most traditional of baits :).

Last year in Yellowstone they had record snows, according to the locals. The Beartooth pass wasn't opened until the week after we left...or. Dunraven Pass opened June 7th or 8th. We drove every road in the park. It snowed when we were there... but with road temps and road crews, there was never a concern about being able to make it. Good tires, 4x4, and 13000 pounds, 445hp ...perhaps that was why I felt fine.


Damn, I'll only have a 381 HP 4x4 do you think I'll be okay? :). Sounds like the timing will be okay, thanks a bunch.

Too bad you won't be there during early July for the Green River Rendezvous in Pinedale. There are tons of opportunities on BLM land throughout the area and eastern Idaho. Every creek and stream has trout. I'll put on my thinking cap and send you a PM.

I would defend myself by saying that I think worms are yucky and gross me out, but I don't know how much that will help.
 
You lucked out... YOU would need a minimum of 380 hp..... You joke, but I really appreciate the amp'ed up power on my Cummins with that much weight and going up the mountains...

Are you reserving campsites, or playing it by ear?

We will be in the 10-11K weight range, but we can drop the trailer for any scenic side trips.

As far as reservations, I haven't gotten that far, but the hope was not to have to, so we could play things by ear. Our preference would be to not be tied to any place or time. We are all set up for boondocking and would only need services to replenish supplies and dump. What was your experiance?
 
I have been to Yellowstone 4 times. Every time is different. We were able to get campsites last year without reservations. Park numbers were off by 50% due to the snow, according to Park numbers. Then again, more sites would have been open if there was less snow. Unfortunantly, due to high water, we couldn't camp at our favorite campgrounds. It is a primitive campground. Slough Creek. Do yourself a favor...GO THERE... it is in the Lamar Valley. It would be best of you get to your campsite at or around noon... Plan your siteseeing around getting to your campsite by this time. You should be able to find a campsite without a problem.

We want to winter, backcountry camp.... snowshoe and xc skiing, sometime.

Never got in the door at Yellowstone. Always had a gate down when I drove by. Some snow for sure. But you should make it this year.

Do you really want suggestions on killing time in Rock Springs or around Rock Springs? I worked there in 1979 .....
Lol, key word is worked there:)) The "Rock" is not a vaction stop but they do have a world class recreation center and very friendly people . Flaming gore just to south is pretty though,and the green river has some good fishing. I would agree with Phil on not needing chains that time of year. If you run into a spring storm you would probably wait it out pulling a camper. Just remember never to drive around the gate if they close'em on the interstate:)) Loved Wyoming,a place where calling a woman" darlin "is still a compliment, everyone still has a sense of humor and the term "you bet" covers it all.

My Thule's are are diamond style,they fit in a compact case that stays in the truck. If you are looking for a new set to have for the ramps then I wouls probably go heavy and get the peerless or equal. I don't think you would ever wish you had less chain when the times to use them.

Will do on the Slough creek, thanks. We want to be in that area for sure for a few days, I've read really early in the Lamar valey is cool. I'll look at the dates. Very helpful.

I've seen a lot of film in winter there and it does look amazing, have to get the boy and myself toughened up before we do that, though :).

I have used Konig Chains in Australia, takes less than 5min to put on for 2 wheels once you get the hang of it. They are a diamond pattern chains with a cable/hoop on the back side and chain on the front side. One little tip so you don't have to stop and re tighten is to use a bungie at the end of the chain tie off so they self tighten.

Thanks all for the advice and suggestions. I finally have chains for the truck in hand.

I had a tough time getting a set though. I decided on traditional chains (ladder style) rather than diamond style because by far my most likely use would be in mud over highway. I could only find 2 manufacturers that made a heavy ladder style for 275/65R18s and ordered a pair of the ones I thought might not be from China. I got the chains and they were from China and short a cross chain to fit perfect. They were the right length overall, but were 9 cross chain chains and should have had 10 to fit right (one fifth of the tire had no chain on it). If you are getting the picture that this was an exercise that was a lot of trouble for what I got you are catching on. Anyway, called the manufacturer a couple times and got them to send me a pair of cross chains. Those came in today.

As I said, I have everything in hand and I appreciate the help.
