Todays ice report

Heading out at sunrise with my buddy John so we could see the ice chunks. Our first 2 spots were iced in so we found a new spot and it turned out ok. Lots of ducks flying, we managed 2 mallards a Black Duck and John got a nice drake Gadwall. When the tide shifted so did the ice and we called it a day because the ice was dragging the decoys.. Rich..

Awesome pics. LOVE the cigar photos. Where are you guys hunting out of ? I was thinking of going out on Sunday but, was concerned after making the trip out last Friday and Saturday and seeing nothing but ice. I hoping that the ice frees up today and tomorrow.

we were off massapequa, bay is iced pretty good Amityville east.. Im lucky I have the boat in a spot where it rarely ices and can access the hunting grounds in minuets. With tomorrows warm weather and rain things should free up even more..

hey John, hope its not pouring, my 10 year old wants to come out.. some of the chunks were thick but a lot should melt tonight too.. Wantagh ramp still frozen up?

I'm sure with the weather tonight, tomorrow should not be a problem. The was not much open water Wednesday and it was locked up all the way to the state channel but today looked a lot better. Short run thru the ice to some open spots. Just watch the thick chunks and pay attention to the tide and winds. Its going to blow out of the south so all that ice will end up back up towards to ramp.
Maybe we will get lucky and wake up tomorrow and it's all gone.

i hunted till the beginning of incoming then the ice started coming in and messing with decoys, when we got to 4 corners there were lots of chunks but we managed with no issues..

Best bet would be tomorrow early afternoon, strong south winds will pull that remaining ice inland so just be careful had 6inch thick sheets outside my canal tuesday still frozen up as of tonight. Also watch the tide as that wind will make the ride out there difficult but should be a good hunt, best of luck

Regarding the ice moving as it breaks up:

I wish I had pictures of such an "ice-out" when I was about 12. My Dad took us down to Heckscher State Park at night to watch the ice piling up on Nicoll's Point, driven by a southeast wind. I recall clearly in the headlights - the unstoppable forces slowly pushing the ice out of the Bay - the pile was about 14' feet high the next morning.
