Tohatsu Marine was established in February 1988 as a joint corporation of Tohatsu Corporation and Brunswick Corporation of the United States. Brunswick is the parent company of Mercury Marine. Some Mercury outboards with less than 60 HP are Tohatsus rebranded as Mercury.
In 2011, Tohatsu and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evinrude_Outboard_MotorsEvinrude Outboard Motors made a deal to make smaller engines ranging from 15 HP and down with Evinrude decals.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tohatsu#cite_note-11[11]
All outboard engines sold in North America by the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_MarineNissan Marine were rebadged Tohatsus.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tohatsu#cite_note-12[12]
Tohatsu four stroke outboard engines above 50 HP sold in North America after 2013 are rebadged Honda.
from Tohatsu site and Wikipedia
Tohatsu also makes parts used by other manufacturers

Exactly. Why the last 25 I bought was a Tohatsu instead of paying a markup for another brand. Had it 4 years and love it. Was a Merc guy in the past. When I bought my 25 the Tohatsu had a bit more aggressive gear ratio allowing better load pushing than the equivalent merc. Other than that merc 25 the same.

Dealers and sales people either do not know or do not wish to admit to the above. Their responses confused me for years.

I have a 2004 18hp Tohatsu on my AA Broadbill and it is sweet, more than enough motor for the boat. Decided on Tohatsu when I found out they make more small outboard motors than any other manufacturer. Dealer I bought from also sells Honda, but said then Hondas require more attention. Still runs like new and so much less gas used than the old 2-strokes.

Thanks for all this information - all in one place. I imagine many of us have heard bits and pieces of the story over the years.

One question: What about Suzuki? They seem to have a fine reputation (and light weights) for small outboards. Any experience or thoughts (just please don't tell me they are a subsidiary of Amazon or Google.....)

All the best,

I bought an 18 Nissan electric start from Cabelas back in 2000 that I still regret selling back in 2012. Great lightweight motors.

Suzuki , last i checked was only motor manufacturer still making all its motors and not farming out to others. They are good motors and favored by commercial waterman quite a bit in my area, mainly because of cost incentives and warranty. My tohatsu dealer also sells Suzukis and really doesn,t see any different maint. issues between them and other current outboards. He sells a lot of commercial motors to crabbers and netters. Wasn,t that long ago Honda was the preferred Commercial motor until their prices got higher than others. Those were most likely built by Tohatsu.
