Thomas (Tom) Eliot Scholberg of Brooklyn Center, MN, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2019 at the age of 68, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He is the son of Justin & Birdie (Lockwood) Scholberg of Ortonville, MN.

Tom graduated from Ortonville High School in 1968. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and three years in the Naval Reserves, and later completed his Master's Degree through the University of Minnesota. He married his high school sweetheart, Debra Inderieden, on June 22, 1974.

Tom enjoyed people, conversation, teaching, boat building, duck hunting, and spending time at the Oakdale Gun Club. Tom retired in 2012 from Hennepin Technical College where he taught Marine Small Engines.

He is survived by his wife, Deb; beloved dogs Booker & Charlie; his father, three brothers, two sisters, nieces & nephews, and many family and friends.

As Tom would say: "Shiny Side Up."

I am so happy that Tom's struggle is over, but I am selfish and am missing my dear friend. I have wanted to pick up the phone and talk to him sooo many times in the last several weeks..

Good speed and smile down on us my friend.

I couldn't agree more phil, tom is the one who helped me get started on building my boat. We had a few awesome hunts together, one nice road trip back before he knew what was going on.

I think I'll build a boat with him in mind in the next few years. I'll be sure to chain the motor on!

I never knew Tom, but have followed his travails through this site- I know the Gift of Life house, spent a little time there, and had sometimes thought about checking in with him when I am at Rochester, never did. I'll be there on Monday, for routine stuff- my story goes on better than Tom's. Thanks, Mark for sharing the struggle and hopes to the end. Dave Evenson, Cumberland Wis

Tom was such a genuine guy, and will be truly missed, here as well as everywhere that others lives touched his. There are so many things we could say about him, so friendly, helpful, and supportive, and in that spirit, I wanted to let everyone know that a donation to Tom's memorial fund is being made on behalf of the membership of duckboats.net.

Godspeed Tom

Chuck

I want to let the fine people of this community know that a donation was made by duckboats.net in Tom's honor and will be used per Deb's discretion. Thanks to everyone who lent their support to Tom's family during this difficult time. Tom was a vital member of this community and will be missed. God bless you Tom.

I was fortunate to be at Tom's celebration of life. It had to be one of the nicest, sincerest, memorials I have attended. The memorial was well attended and many were dressed in various camo outfits or trap shooting garb. Tom's sister Barb got up and did a wonderful job of memorializing Tom. A couple of Tom's trap shooting buddies also spoke and also represented Tom very well.

A few of Tom's phrases made their way into many of the stories. For those who knew Tom, how many have heard:

"Wasn't that fun"?
"Shiny side up"? (It was relayed by Tom's niece that he told her this when teaching her how to drive - Shiny side up, not tire side up)
"I'd rather be in a deer stand thinking about God then in church thinking about hunting"?
"Yesterday was the past and tomorrow is the future. Today is a gift and that is why they call it the present"

The DBHF forum was mentioned more than once in the memorializing and many of the people I spoke with were aware of the site and what it meant to Tom. It is a testament to the many good people who call this place home. One of the songs, an I can't recall the author, as called "Build me a Boat" or something close to this. Very cool.

Tom, per his wishes was cremated. He also had a request to have his trap buddy Dan load several boxes of shells with a little of his ashes. Those shells were handed out with the request being to shoot the ashes out over a favorite hunting spot. I picked up a shell and this next fall's opener will have me hunting out west near where Tom was born and where we would meet up every opener. I think it will be a fitting tribute to Tom's memory. If anyone is interested in perhaps picking up a shell, I can reach out to Dan and see if he has any left.

In speaking with Deb, she mentioned that the memorial money received is being used to build a bench for the Oakdale gun club where Tom spent many many days. A very nice remembrance.

I've been off of DBHP for 6 months and I am really sadden to see that Tom has passed. I never met Tom except in cyberspace, but he was a wealth of knowledge on boat motors and came across as just a really nice guy. I'll miss his contributions here. Tom, God speed and thanks for everything you shared with us.
