I never shoot cans unless the snow is blowing sideways or there is at least 2' chop.

Good one! Love those American Water Spaniels. A friend I haven't seen in a while has one and he's such a neat working dog.
 
I was out this morning Rick and thought of you. I was wondering if you've been getting out to shoot some of those can's about now. Guess I have my answer.

Are they down in droves yet? Still not a lot of ducks up this way. Very slow actually. Been heading out west as well and slow there too.

Good to hear from you.

The number of cans has been steadily growing the past week and should keep growing for the next several days. Historically, peak numbers are around Nov 4 for pools 7 & 8, then they slowly decline throughout November. Have been seeing a fair number of scaup on the big water as well. Lots of mallards and gadwall in the backwaters.

The thing I like best about hunting cans is watching them fly in formation. The one Mickey is holding in the photo was the nicest bull in a flock of ten. They passed over the decoys about 40 yards out three times before committing, then he led them right into the pocket. He separated just enough to pick him out cleanly.

You are welcome to join me this weekend. I expect to get out some.
