I am going to find myself in Topeka from 11/22-11/30. This is an unexpected trip to see the in-laws. My father in law is going in for surgery and we are headed out to see him before the surgery and to help out afterwards. Besides Cabelas, What is there to do in the Area? My task will be to keep 4 boys between the ages of 9 and 4 busy...My wife and her sister are going to be tending to Dad. Any help with boy friendly day trips would be very much appreciated.

Cheech,
Depends on what they're interested in.
Unfortunately, it has finally decided to get cold the next week, so you'll likely be inside.

There is a combat air museum in Topeka which older kids might enjoy (who doesn't like old planes???)
There's also a discovery center that I've heard about, but I don't know much about it.
There is a really good science city in Kansas City at Union Station and there are usually other activities around Union Station this time of year.
There's also a place called Wonderscope that I've heard good comments about but don't know much about

If you are willing to drive a couple hours, Squaw Creek National Wildlife refuge is holding a ton of birds right now (it may change as there is a cold spell coming in the next 10 days with a low of 12 on Saturday night) They don't have the 2 million snow geese that they typically hold in early spring, but they do have about 130K ducks right now.

Sorry I don't know more, I've been buried in work since moving to Manhattan and haven't explored Topeka that well.

I hope everything goes well for your father in law.

Scott

There is the Topeka zoo too.

I know Scott said it would be cold that week but it doesn't really get cold in Kansas, being a former Iowan. :)

Steamboat Arabia museum in Kansas City.
Jesse James farm kearney Mo.
Squad creek NWR mound city mo
My kids liked the museum in Lawrence Kansas

Scott, Craig and Tom,

Thanks for all the ideas. That should really help me keep the boys busy. And thanks for the good wishes for Dad.

PS...Cold and Northern Vermont...I know Cold;)
