Traditions Acrylic Paints

I've used oil paints successfully for many years on decoys, both shelf and hunting birds. I've started playing around with the Traditions Acrylics. I really like the soft look of the birds prior to using the glazing medium. My question is . . . Is the glazing medium really necessary with the Traditions paints? The couple of birds that I did finish with the paints, and overcoated with the glazing medium, took on an ok sheen, but I'd prefer the soft finish of just the paints.

By itself, the paint is matte-I use Golden, but have had the opportunity to mess with some of the jantzen's-Any glazing will tend to produce gloss, something that is not always desirable on a shooting stool.

Try cutting it more with water, like 50/50 or even more. It will reduce the shine. You can also tint the glaze...with raw sienna/raw umber produces a nice mellow overcoat.

I used Traditinons quite a bit and think the glaze is necessary for a gunning bird, not necessary for a shelf bird.

Good luck with it...

50/50 water and glaze in the traditions line is a great finish. It will keep the paint from picking up stain from water and toughens it up some
