Tragic story

That is really some tragedy. Then to think that their hunting dog stayed by the body. They must have been caught up in some of the hellish winds that we had here that swept northeast towards OK.

Kaw Lake is huge and the terrain is flat. It can get nasty in a heartbeat. Prayers to the families. Backroad Anthem was really coming up through the ranks. It's shame and a lost for not only for their families but music as well.
 
Temps were in the low 30s with a 30-45 MPH wind from the north. I haven't heard what type of boat they were in. One of the news reports said they weren't wearing PFDs.
 
Things like this make me ever thankful for those i hunt with....if one of us thinks it might be a good idea the other will say how its not such a good idea!
 
The missing hunter was found today. According to news reports he died of hypothermia and was found on land, some distance away from the water. You always think if you make it out of the water you win, but you also need to be prepared to survive the cold.

Yep, we all push the envelope at some point in our young lives. I've managed to push it a few times where I've missed barges, flipped in cold water and stayed on a island more than once due to things like a freak snow storm, pushing a motor that I knew should have gone to the shop or getting lost in the fog and running out of gas. Now I look back and find that 30 some years later I don't really lean on the envelope anymore. 60 ain't old but I'd like to see 70.
 
Like you said ED we have all done it at one time or another and maybe just been lucky.
At 72 i am a lot more cautious.

Another one... This happened in Missouri after the area had 6-10" of rain in 3 days. Very dangerous conditions to try hunting.
 
Jan. 13 update:

The boat was a 10 foot 1975 flat bottom jonboat with no motor and only two paddles to propel it. The boat was loaded down with two hunters, a dog, a cooler, decoys, guns, and equipment. The winds were along the lines of 40 mile an hour with 60 mile an hour gust. Both men survived capsizing of the boat and actually made it ashore. BOTH men were found wearing life preservers. Chase Mooreland the first hunter that was found was located on the shoreline but OHPA is assuming he returned to the water to stay warm after shedding his waders. Craig Strickland the second body that was found was found a little ways away from the lake where he had crawled before passing. Both hunters succumbed to hypothermia.
