Transom Savers

I always trailered my old Smokercraft with the motor down. But with the new Lund the motor has to be raised a bit to give it enough ground clearance. The Lund dealer said that a chunk of 2 by 4 placed between the mounting bracket and the motor will provide adequate support and ground clearance. So I've been trailering with the wood in there since the fall. However I've had my son watch we back the boat out of the bait shop parking lot a few times and he says that the lower unit comes pretty close to the road. So now I'd like to get a transom saver in order to transport the motor in a higher position and to provide better support against the trailer.

I looked at Bass Pro today and they had two models. A basic Bass Pro model for $40 and a different brand "shock absorbing" transom saver for $75. What would you recommend?

I picked up a basic model Attwood transom saver from Walmart. It works fine as far as I know. I don't think these have to be too fancy. Meaning, I am not sure there is a lot of benefit returned for spending more money.

Thanks. Someone else told me that they got one from WalMart and it worked fine. I'll have to go there and see what they have.

Tom, what you are showing should not be confused with a transom saver. What you have provides some clearance for the lower unit, and takes the strain off the motor's tilt and trim, or lift catch, but still imparts all the forces on the transom. Certainly boats built/designed for those motor sizes can handle the weight and torque.... I think the transom savers from Walmart and the like are a good idea for our small motorboard duck boats.

Thanks again. I'll look into those other options.

As far as the Bass Pro Model being more for "larger boats" instead of small duck boats... what would you consider a 17' Lund with a 60 hp 4-stroke? Also it appears that the Bass Pro model is listed for Mercs, is it compatible with Honda's?
