Union NJ Eats?

Have a training class that requires an overnight in Union NJ.
Any one have a good place for dinner that is real and local, IE not Outback or Olive Garden?
15 to 20 min drive not a problem.

Thanks.

Bob:

I'm sure the Jersey guys will have some ideas, but when I briefly lived and worked in Newark, I used to go to a restaurant in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood called Iberia. A little pricey, but some of the best restaurant meals I've ever had. Traditional Portugese/Spanish food--try the Paella. Great tapas, too.
Excellent Sangria if you're not driving.

A web search shows it still exists, but I can't vouch for the current quality as it was probably 1992 the last time I was there:

That whole neighborhood is pretty neat--mostly Portugese, Spanish, and Brazilian immigrants, with good restaurants and bakeries all around. You can surely find a Spanish bar or a place for Brazilian barbecue, too.

I'm guessing it's no more than a half hour from Union.

Iberia is really good.

I like Jose Tejas for Tex Mex in Woodbridge, but it is sort of a chain as there are a few around the country.

Jeff, Craig, and Jim,
You guys were right on! Walked Ironbound to shop a bit and ate at Iberia.
I am going to fast for a day to recover. Cool neighborhood. Not much parking for duckboats behind F250's though. Glad I left mine home.

I do not envy you guys on the traffic. Boston is worse but not by much

Glad you had a good meal. You are right about north jersey. Nothing against it, but I'm glad I moved to the shore a long time ago. I much prefer hearing the ocean from my house over the NJ turnpike!

I'm glad to hear Iberia is still worth the trip. I almost stopped off for a meal when I drove down to Delaware to pick up my sculling boat two years ago, but figured a truck and trailer and parking in that neigborhood was probably a non-starter.

I seem to recall they had valet parking--now that could have been interesting!

As for Newark, I lived there for 3 years when I was just out of college. Living in a big city (and within an hour train ride of NYC) was a great experience for me, but I was happy to move back to a less civilized place after 3 years.

The only two things that saved me living there were the Delaware Water Gap, which has some nice wild trout streams, and Sandy Hook, where the salt marsh almost looked like home.

That's where I live, or at least very close to the hook. The hunting isn't what it used to be, but we still have our good days.

I have to go back in late Jan. I will deff look for the tip on the smaller places Jim. That is a cool little spot right in the thick of it.

Bob, is your class at Mack Boring? Many years ago, many more than I care to admit to, when I was working at a boat dealer on the Cheasapeake, I was spent a weekend at a diesel class at Mack Boring. I got to see their drag truck break some traction bars when they popped the clutch in the parking lot. That was pretty interesting to a 19 year old kid.

John

John,
that truck is sitting on top of the pile at a NJ scrap yard after a local sharpie bought a huge pile of scrap, but the deal required that the truck goes with it.

Larry Berlin was great to meet and talk about the guys who built that truck and where they are now at lunch.

He's been there for over 40 years!

How is that light working out? I hope it is enough for what you were looking for.

Bob

Hi Bob. That light is great. I book marked that site as they have a great price on those 123 batteries. Since you've shown that to me, I showed it to my brother who is a federal agent with the DOJ. I think he is going to buy something there also.

It shard to imagine that that truck was just one more piece of scrap to have hauled away. Think of all the stories it could have told since the days I was there.....

John

It wasnt scrap but did not have a motor in it and the guy wanted the truck as payment for the work required to take the scrap that was filling up the needed space.

I agree on the history that truck could tell.

Glad the light worked.
