Unusual Sea Duck

I had two green wing teal fly into my spread today. The interesting thing is that I was about a mile from shore in the river. I had two little flocks of blue bills, several scotors, a bunch of buffle heads, and two lost teal fly into the spread this morning. I've never even seen teal where I was hunting before. I was excited. Thought I'd share.

That's pretty cool and always surprises me. I've shot GWT a mile out while layout hunting for divers. Just yesterday with temps around freezing and a howling wind we had GWT decoy into our GE decoys - not layout hunting but still a surprise for this time of year in Wisconsin.
 
Ive seen teal and black ducks 5-8 miles in the Delaware bay rafting up. It was a safe place to rest during the day when hunting pressure was high. So I dont see why they wouldn't go out on a river too.

They may have just been heading south and decided to take a rest in your spread, a permanent rest. LOL

Those GWT can be some of the last ducks around St Louis Bay before freeze-up. Which, btw, has occurred - I believe winter is here in the western end of the Great Lakes.
 
I know Jeff Coats had some in his rig a few years back.

I've had Wood ducks, mallards, countless bluebills, and a teal or two as well.

A friend in Delaware Bay shot a hen a few weeks ago along with a bunch of scoters about 6 miles from shore.

Goofy little suckers and a nice surprise for sure. Congrats.

We've shot wood ducks a mile from land out on Mobile Bay, lots of teal too..
