Up in PEI, but without a gun

Well folks, I am happy to be at home in Canada again, thanks for the tips on things to see and do. The trip up went by quick and it looks like I will be starting work on monday... Guess thats a good thing, but I was hoping to get a few duck hunts in before working but, for several reasons that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

Forgot about the strict gun laws up here. To get a gun, I gotta do a course, fill in an application and wait anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Sounds like I may miss the duck season this year. Saw my first sea ducks, and black ducks and that was really nice. Found some nice beaches for fishing and some nice people to get a pup from, but I am a bit annoyed at how time consuming it is to get a gun up here. Its just not right for a shotgun (I am ok with a bit of regulation on large caliber high capacity, but lets be realistic with a hunting gun). In oklahoma, all you need is some cash, and voila, you get a gun. Here, you need permits, background checks, and about 50% more money to get the same thing. :'(

Guess I will just have to start saving up and make sure I get something that is worth the wait. Perhaps 2 or 3 shotguns, incase a friend comes for a visit.

Anyways, sorry to whine... Everyone tell me how awesome the duck season is, it may cheer me up :)

Jon, good to hear things went well and that you are getting settled in. As for the gun, just make it happen. So what if it takes two weeks or two months, you will finally have it. Good luck.

Thanks Al, I think all this spare time will give me a good opportunity to start looking at pups... which is going to be a whole lot of fun that I couldn't do in OKC due to excessive work!

Any ducks showing up in NM? On the drive north we were seeing a LOT of smaller flocks of geese and a few big flocks of ducks around the michigan area. I imagine they will be heading south pretty soon as its getting pretty darn cold up here!

Cheers,

Jon

Good to hear that it is beginning to get cold up north. That will make it easier for them to fly south. As for down here, it will be a bit difficult without much water in the area. This past week I heard a lot of flocks of migrating sandhill cranes. That is always a good sign. Glad to hear that you had a safe trip, Jon.

Sounds like you are in New Jersey. To get a gun here in the grand state of NJ. you have to fill out paper work for a background check. Fill out paper work for a mental health background check and take it to your local police station. Go get your finger prints done. Then wait 30 to 90 days to get your gun buyers card. Then you go to buy your gun at the gun shop and they charge you more money to do another on the spot background check for each purchase. That's just for a long gun. Hand gun you need a special permit on top of all that stuff. Crazy

Hi Jon,

if your confident, you can challenge the course which may speed things up. Here's a link to the manual... http://firearmslaw.ca/gun-law-resources/licensing-process/firearms-safety-course-materials/

Remember the acronyms "Acts" and "Prove" and use common sense when handling the guns and you shouldn't have a problem. You can call Chuck at Fish and Wildlife Division in Charlottetown at (902)368-4683 to arrange a date, time and what the process is.

Hope this helps,

Locke

Thanks alot, thats gonna get me going on the right track... I think I will do the course, never hurts to get a refresher and some local knowledge, and I am still relatively a relatively new gun (2 years of killing ducks).

Cheers,

Jon
