Upland grouse picture

Everything in that picture is eye catchy. Best time of year for sure.

Beautiful. After being out of the upland game for the past couple years as Skeet has aged, I'm excited to get back at it. It sounds like this year's grouse season in Maine is one for the books, I hope next year is good, it would be great to get back up there.

That's as good as it gets in my book. [smile]

Ya did good, looks like both cock birds.

Ruffed Grouse I hand pluck, and truly enjoy.

Appears I gotta get to Maine one of these days for a good time.

Best regards
Vince

Vince--this is the year. I'm hearing good reports from all over, but I spent a week in late September up in the Allagash region and have never seen so many broods of partridge. I'm sure they've been thinned out and educated now that we are a week into the season, but I've never seen anything like that. One day just walking a trail to and from two trout ponds--maybe 1.5 miles of walking, no dog, and just walking the trail, not beating brush, we put up more than 20 partridge. That's not counting the similar number we put up driving there and back from the camp we were staying in.

I'm hearing pretty good things from other parts of state, but this was just exceptional.

Beautiful photo Troy. I'm photographically challenged, I never seem able to capture the moment like that.

I agree with Jeff, we hunted last Saturday and Monday. I've hunted grouse/partridge in Maine almost every year since the early 70's, this is by far the most birds I remember seeing along the roads. We struggled to fill the bag only because the leaves were still on and old Ruff (even the young ones) took full advantage. As usual the birds we got were stuffed with clover. Heading back around the 15th for round 2, my lab Gunner says he has a plan. Always listen to the dog. [;)]

Great to hear. We go up 10/18-10/25. Last year wasn't too hot for us. this year will be Andrea's first grouse Hunt, happy to hear there are good numbers.

Nick,

The bust to boom bird numbers are amazing. Last year was abysmal for us, this year I almost hit birds with the car several times. Hope you have a great trip.

Another thing I noticed, which you can see in Troy's photos on his other thread. The fall foliage is wonderful this year, despite the "experts" on TV predicting poor color due to the drought. It also seems a week early to me?
