Used 5 hp go devil

How well would it push a 14' jon with 2 guys gear & dog?

That would depend on your expectations. I'll venture to wager that most fellas would not be happy with that combination. A big factor in "how well" is how well in what conditions? A five hp mud motor pushing acrosss flat water might do just fine. A five hp mud motor pushing across a 2 foot chop with a cross wind, might not even keep you headed the direction you need to go.

I have run a 6.5hp long tail on a 14foot Carsten's Canvasback and my speed varied from 4mph to 6.5mph. This was with a load of one man, one dog and related gear.

Not sure about the worth.
What size 14' jon? A narrow 14x36 or a high sided 14x48?
Either way, I imagine that a 5 hp mud motor will barely push a 14' jon boat at hull speed. I'd bet you might get 5-6 mph. I dont think it will come close to getting the hull up on plane.
And I would not entertain using it on anything but protected calm water.

I ran a 9 hp Go-Devil on a skinny 14'X32 jon boat and speed was not impressive. It was a one man and a dog affair. I run a 16 hp longtail on my 15X30 duck skiff and it will get along pretty good. A 5 on a 14' with 2 guys and gear is gonna be a poor performer.

What conditions do you expect to use it in?

I can't imagine that motor on a 14' jon doing anything in heavy weeds or mud. Speed is one issue, conditions are another. If you are going to have to push, pull and pole why bother buying the motor.

I can answer that. I have a 5 horse mud motor that I bought for my sportspal canoe. Way to much power for a canoe, it will work but if you make one mistake it's over. I have a 14 foot big jon(wide) that I put it on the back of just to see if it could push it and it will. I put the boat on the White River in Indianapolis which is a small but fast moving river. Just myself and a dog no gear. GPS it down river at about 7 mph and 3-4 mph up river. It will push the boat but don't plan to get anywhere fast. I don't think I have run more then 4 tanks of gas through it, (1 gal. tank). It is just sitting in my garage. If you are interested email me and let's talk about a fair price. Greg MLB

I guess it would be part of my duck fleet ? I content that one boat does not fit all situations generally that's why I own : 21' SWAT, kevlar maxi-poke boat, banks layout, 6 14' deep v's scattered around North America, 24' pontoon, 14' x 36 jon, a canoe, and a grady white. Previously owned : a buscik layout, a 18' HD jon, Armstrong sneak, Aqua pod, banks 2 man layout and I'm pretty sure a few others my old brain has drained. Any one out there as out there as I am on duck like inventory ? If I start counting decoys and guns it could get nasty, my family will have one hell of an estate sale!

Al Koz Al:I feel your pain.I'm in the same boat(pun intended). Reminds me of the expression, contemplatng one's demise:"I hope my wife doesn't sell my stuff at a garage sale for what I told her I paid for it"

I'll do you a favor, avoid the estate sale - send one (your pick) down to me. I'll find a use for it! Trip.
