Visqueen Revisited

lou, great post with great ideas. and my buddy wonders why people use clear spray curtains on layouts, ill have to show him this! so, when is whistlers kid brother gonna be up for sale??? best, mark

Mark,
Thanks, glad you like the idea. Works great....in many situations.
We've been waiting for a positive change in the economy to put the money into another prototype set of patterns & molds. Might be starting on it this winter if I can lay my hands on the money to do the project right. It requires different gel coats & resins and none of that stuff is cheap anymore. Just the stuff we make our boats with has tripled in cost in the last year or so. Each time I buy raw materials I almost go into cardiac arrest with the increased costs.
Anyhow.....might be able to do the Kid Brother this season......hopefully.

Lou what a great tutorial thanks for sharing, over hear in the uk we can get blue visqueen as well do you think that will work also.
Eddie.

Hi Eddie,
Thanks mate!
I haven't used the Blue but I don't think it would work as well as the clear but I wouldn't walk away from trying.
We've also used Black on the ground and on snow to look like water. That has worked well.

thanks for the tip.

Lou,
Thanks again for the replay of this tutorial. It should work just as you have experienced, after control of the plastic. I'm reminded of some posts either on this site or another of Scandanavian duck hunters who use solid white boats. I would suppose to simulate ice.

Kevin puntgunners hear in the uk dress up all in white as cammo when they go out punting and the birds dont see them against the arison.
Eddie

Actually Kevin, the White is to depict a bird dropping covered rock! Outside of Guilford Harbor are two rocks, inner and outer white tops. There's also a number (7 in CT alone) of "White Rocks" around the coast and it ain't because they get snow covered in the winter :^) Sounds like a good story anyway.

You want 6mill visqueen. Unfortunately, it basically comes in 100' rolls and the narrowest I have ever gotten is 16'. Keep the excess in the box away from chemicals and fumes, out of the light. Mice love to chew it up for nests too. It's a milky color. You can get 10+ mill plastic that is like a rubber but I don't know how that would work since it is crystal clear and the price will make your anus twitch.

I've only used it once with those boys in Alaska, but it sure worked that day. Those guys had never shot three geese in a season and Carl got these three out of one flock out in the bay, sitting in a mud colored KARA. Someone must have called the coast guard because he got buzzed by a rescue helicopter. Me and Nick were sitting int he tender watching the magic. Oh ya, and they sunk that tender in that spot the next weekend if I remember. No one died, but they got famous.

Somebody maybe already said it, but free source of heavy plastic can be found on mattresses. A king sized comes in a big ass bag.

Greenhouses too. We use 6 mil UV stabilized poly that last 4-5 years...every fall we replace 3-4 ACRES. I send it to the recyclying center, but if anyone wants a boat sized piece, it wouldn't be missed as we are paid by the ton.

Chuck,

Cut me a piece of plastic for my Fatboy! The boat is about 12' by 4'. I'll get you out on a diver hunt if you bring the plastic:)

What ever became of those guys anyway?

I just got the website back up and running and have included the tutorial on visqueen. If you go to the site: www.lockstockbarrell.com and scroll down the left side to the "PDF files", you'll find the "Visqueen as Camo". It's a pdf file and I've included stuff from responses to this thread. You can click and view or right click and "save target as" and put it in a file for later reference.
If anybody has anything to add, let me know and I can add it. If anybody doesn't want their name in their as ..credit where credit is due....let me know & I can remove any names. Not that anybody is innocent and requiring protection. ;)
Later guys and thanks for all the support.
Lou

Hey Eric,

Last I heard from them they were pretending to be college types in Fairbanks. Carl said he was putting a few sandhill cranes on the ground, but not too many ducks this season.
