waterproofing canvas boat cover

Greg
The nearest Cabellas is 100miles from me and not my favorite store. Gander mtn has only small spray cans. I'll check with a tent co. in Madison when I get a chance. It's not on the top of my list at this time. Too many down trees to clean up from latest storm.

Years ago they used to waterproof canvas tents by dissolving paraffin wax in kerosene and painting it on the tent. I did a tent once that way, it never leaked but it was heavy. I don't remember any bad fumes in the tent once it dried. I don't know what it would do to the color of dark canvas.

If Thompson does not know what their product works well for in a public admission then it might be a liability issue........some canvas is fire "proofed" and possibly it might change that property, thus they perfer not to have a law suit when some nit wit burns themselves or someone else...

I can attest that is does work well on canvas as a water proofing not withstanding Thompson not admitting to that application as being effective. Many a storm was survived without a wet interior of the tent....

As for Thompson working as a wood sealer.....now that is marginal in many applications with many better products out there....again personal observation of a failed product

To be fair to the Thompson rep he said if duck hunters (boaters) felt it was effective to go with it but he had no data to recommend using it on canvas for waterproofing as a rep for the company.

I was guessing as to a possible explanation as to the response from Thompsons. Liability is a big issue and waterproofing does alter fire proof properties, that was an issue when I was outfitting and I never found a decent solution other then caution with woodburning stoves and such inside a wall tent..

I probably worded the reply a bit harsh and that was not intended. My apology. My typical insert foot, choke, gag, and then make amends and feel like a nit wit.

I have used Thompsons Water seal or the Deck sealer Fleet Farm sells on canvas tents that we use for hunting out west. The water proofing will last for a long time. I have also used it to water proof older nylon tents and it works great, just try to get a light as possible coat for the nylon tents. Garden sprayer is a quick way to apply it then brush it in with a sponge brush. Did a 10 man Arctic tent last year and it took about 1.5 gallons and let it dry for a couple of days. It work very well and we were dry all Elk season with several inches of wet snow.
