We have reached an all time high in the US!

I'm just waiting for the "lobster in school lunch" lobby to get momentum and give me an excuse to go back to school. "Who cares if it's dipped in melted butter? That's a lean protein!"
[/i]

They'd probably do something asinine like substitute corn syrup based margarine...because we all need to eat MORE corn syrup...like it isn't already present in EVERY processed food we eat!

Tod, I do understand much better than I let on, and they have been preaching for years (since I was in grade school in the 1970's at least) the link between nutrition and learning.

I don't for a minute make light of that, and the thought that children are hungry and going to school should be something from the 1800's, not the 2000's.

But...

This is also an issue of how far We are willing to allow the government to insert itself. When we have to have lunch inspectors, I think the pendulum has swung. No, the kids shouldn't suffer for the parents' choices, issues, problems, etc., but there is a point of "enough". We shouldn't necessarily have to shoulder the burden of the parents' bad decisions, either, but somehow it was determined that We should. And to an extent, it starts becoming a vicious circle with succeeding generations becoming more dependent on government to save them from themselves.

Perhaps I should have been more rational, but every now and again I let the demon out of the box. And this is such a grand failure that it really underscores the point...the government inserted itself with the best of intentions and did more harm than good as a result.

90% of what our government does is protect stupid people from themselves...10% of what they do is protect stupid people from people just a wee bit less stupid...

My wife is HEAVILY involved in our local school as a volunteer, and if she catches wind of anything like this coming our way I guarantee there will be one hell of a fight.

I thought the first story was bad, but that can be attributed to one stupid person causing the problem. The yahoo linked story is amazing.

...the government inserted itself with the best of intentions and did more harm than good as a result. This is exactly what liberals( & liberal dominated governments) do. They have what seems like an idea that no one should be opposed to, i.e. insuring good nutrition for children, and they totally screw it up, primarily because they dont take enough time to consider all the ramifications of what they are doing. Then, when they screw it up, instead of trying to fix the problem, they want more control and more flawed programs. I/m not really mcuh of a pessimist but I have serious doubts about the ability of this country to continue as it historically was.

We actually had great nutritious meals at my high school cafeteria, maybe because it was a trade school and the culinary dept cooked and served all the meals. There was a public restaurant at the school and we ate the same meals. The fresh pastries, salad bar and bread were my favorites.
I always looked forward to eating there at lunch and felt sorry for my friends that went to the public town schools.

Definitely liked this thread. Good discussion. Sorry not duck related though.... Slow time of the year.

Agree with the above. Good intentions, but poor management, excution and no concern for cost.

I don't have children, so can't comment either way on the school lunch program. But if I was that parent, I would be making multiple trips to the school and be on a first name basis with my representative.

I work in healthcare and we are going through drastic changes; some of which are good, many of which are not. Unfortunately, I have become very pessimistic about our future. When you have "leaders" of Congress say, "We just need to pass this bill to find out what is in it..." is NOT responsible governing.

I am also very pessimistic about the upcoming election. Even with a Republican sweep, it is going to be more of the same.

Big changes for the US in the next twenty years. A "New Kind of Socialism" Going to be an interesting ride.....

Steve,

My father said several years back that pretty much the difference in the two political parties is that the Democrats will take the country off the cliff doing 150 mph. The Republicans will still take it over the cliff, but probably doing 55, drawing it out a little longer.

We can argue that we are getting the government we deserve, but that does absolutely nothing to help reverse the course.

We now have more people taking out than putting in. I do not know of any system in which that results in long-term survival, much less excellence. And yet, even if there are those in our government who might acknowledge that fact, nobody is willing or able to do anything about it, seemingly. Everyone is very happy to cut spending as long as it doesn't impact their _______________.

School lunch is not about nutrition or feeding kids.
School lunch is an arbitrary method of showing that the state hits a mark. I'm not even close to saying that some kids don't benefit at all. I just know that lunch is a mark the school has to hit to be paid. Lunch is a check box that means a full school day.

The measure of education is sadly, far too often far removed from RRR. It's about hitting arbitrary marks on a state imposed dart board.

I am in no way casting stones at anyone in education, quite the contrary, I feel for them with the crap they have to put up with. A kid "can" get a great public education but the parents have to realize that a great education is not the goal of the state. (although it is the goal of most of the teachers)

Like most things run by the government, it reminds me of a Dr. Seuss book.

As a father of three boys, I am up early and persoanlly pack their lunches along with mine. My wife has ingrained in me that they WILL have a nutritious lunch which consists of juice, sandwich (usually turkey or ham) some healthy chips (Sun Chips) or crackers and cheese, and a fruit or apple sauce cup. She inspects the lunch boxes to make sure it all was eaten when they come home. I would be plenty pissed to find out that a state worker is taking away my kids lunch to replace it with state bought garbage. I would immediately belive that some company out there won a contract to feed this slop to school kids while some politician owns stock in the company. NO I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it always seems that sooner or later you find out that a politician was getting rich off of a program one way or another. I am all for providing healthy food to the kids that can't afford it. I am also for WIC programs to ensure that the ESSENTIAL foods are going to the families who need it. Schools have already removed all of the candy and soda machines and replaced it with healthy snacks and juices which is fine, that doesn't bother me a bit. Some kids probably eat better at school than they eat at home.

Oh, yeah...you hit the nail on the head there!

Most video sites are blocked here at work, but search for Jamie Olivers Food Revolution in LA...scarry how much control the food industry has over the education system.

Sorry, I call bullshit on this one. My kids go to public school and I can assure you that no one is going to the extent the state and/or locally employed wacko did at this place.
Fed put guidelines in place, but the state chose to go farther:

The state regulation reads:

“Sites must provide breakfast and/or snacks and lunch meeting USDA requirements during the regular school day. The partial/full cost of meals may be charged when families do not qualify for free/reduced price meals.

“When children bring their own food for meals and snacks to the center, if the food does not meet the specified nutritional requirements, the center must provide additional food necessary to meet those requirements.”

I think of these stories when people ask me "Why do you homeschool?"

Oh boy...should I let the monster out of the box? Homeschooling, in my humble opinion, is not the solution...far from it.

You would be incorrect to assume that I said it was the answer. I did not say that. I have met plenty of people that should not home school. Not everyone has the ability. I have met plenty of people that should not have kids in the first place.

Good reply Ron. I truely believe the biggest problem with public school isn't the teachers, isn't the administration, isn't the students, isn't the budget...but is lack of parental involvement.

Didn't insinuate you were unfit to do so...but the majority of the home schoolers I've met I don't think should do it...some flat out do it piss poor...we do know one family who did it very well, but like invloved parents at school, unfortunately are the minority...

Another scary thought...un-schooling...

And on a lighter note...a little home school humor...

Truer words were never spoken. This problem isn't just a recent problem,it's been building for quite
awhile.A fair sized portion of our society has no idea how or just doesn't care,to raise and be
responsible for their children...How do you reverse this???
