Westlake

The Battle Axe is the name of it. I love the tool but you need to be really careful with it. http://www.capeforge.com/custom.html
One of the best knive makers I have ever worked with and they have developed some other custom knives that I wanted including their #9 and a larger draw knive.

We are arriving on Thursday night, we will not be there for the head carving, Mark I can bring my knives for you.:) We are heading to the International Bunker on Sat morning with some youth athletes that are training for the USA Shooting Nationals in June. "Little Hank" whi si not so little anymore is shooting International Trap Doubles and we are going to train on Sat morning for a while. Will be around the rest of the time at the show and looking forward to dinner Mark on Sat night count on that. Also the after show party by the pool for all those still around. Can't wait to see everyone. Matt working on one right now hope I can have it done for you. :)
Talk to you guys later. Hank

Hank...

I was wondering about a knife you had at West Lake about two years ago that looked similiar to the Uri style knives used for skinning game (round blades)...It was a very slick carving knife...You were literally placing the heads on the floor and taking out inches of material in one push down with the knife...

Regards,

Kristan

Hank I couldn't agree with you more about the knives. I just received my new #2 knife from them and the next day I ordered 5 more knives because the quality is second to none. I am also going to be getting an axe and a new draw knife at the worlds. Hopefully we can meet and bs a little at the show guys. Can't wait to meet everyone!

Can someone explain exactly what this show is to those who have never been there ( like me ). I think by all the posts I have figured out that every posting here had a great time in previous years. I ask because I have been wanting to start carving my own decoys to use hunting, I just don't know where to get started. Would this two hour trip for me be worth it for someone who does not know which way is up when it comes to carving decoys ?

Michael:
Westlake is one of the shows that you don't want to miss. It has the dintinction of pulling in some of the best carvers in the nation. Beyond that there is just shear numbers: carvers, decoys, vendors, and parties! It really is a social event that passes itself off as a competition. The whole hotel is booked with carvers and collectors, the days are filled with competitions and wandering through the collectible rooms (they ring the pool). Each evening we congregate in the lobby to discuss weighty subjects as raised primaries, what "IS" a decoy, contest rules, stupid contest rules and near sighted judges. All while consuming copious amounts of our favorite beverage. Please stop by and spend some time, it's a great event!

Heck yeah, I drive 5 hours each way just for Sunday.

Michael,

The answer to your question is yes. A two hour drive will be a very small investment for what you stand to gain by attending the Westlake show. If you only have one day to spend and are planning a turn around trip, I did that many times in the past, I would come early Saturday morning and stay as late as you can. The Antique Decoy dealers are still open and wanting people to shop their rooms. That alone could take up most of the day. The competitions start at around 10:00am and for someone interested in getting involved there is much to see in all of that. Maybe most importantly from what you've posted as your interest in getting started are the vendors in the Ballroom. You will be able to see just about all of the available tools and materials you'll need to get started. To be able to walk across the hall to make comparisons is far superior to looking at web pages or catalogs.

Then there are the people that you will meet. And that is with out a doubt the most valuable aspect of this show. For the most part just about everyone is willing to give a few tips to people looking to get into decoy making. Some of the vendors will even let you try out their tools and materials so you can get a feel as to what works best for you.

You stand to learn a great deal by coming for a small investment of your time. This show is one of those rare "win, win" situations.

When you get there please look me up, I'm usually around the pool or in the decoy dealer's rooms.

Kyle and I will be getting in Friday evening and staying through Sunday afternoon. Not sure who is looking forward to it more, him or me. Dave Robinson, let me know about Friday night.

Mike, 3 years ago I have never heard of westlake or the show until I talked to Clint Taylor of Taylor Decoys & he suggested I go because of the people, seminars, competition, vendors ect. He was right my wife & I are attending again this year which is our third year & I hope to have many more. Joe

I'll be there Friday-Sunday and am looking forward to seeing everyone.

George "Obi juan" Williams will not be in attendance this year. He's in Phys therapy after getting hip surgery last week. Everything went well and he's as ornery as ever. The doc's would let him keep the femoral head. He was hoping to make a suicide knob for his truck.

Therapy is going well, and i hope to have sutures out this wednesday.
Hope you all have a great time--drive safely, and have a ball on sunday!
