What a great time of year to be out and about. Enjoying the rewards of both Summer and Fall. Hunting, fishing, garden – all producing.

The other day I was able to find a deer with Gus in the blind to boot!!!

Nice togue and a great brookie for Gus. You fishing my country? Seem to recall you were planning a Maine trip.

Gotta love fall!

Just wish I could see the pics :(

Catch some brookies??

Sorry Carl on the pics, I saw that you were having trouble seeing them - tell your IT guy at work you are having trouble looking at photobucket when at work :).

As for fish, more lakers than brookies, but Gus did catch the prettiest 'lil stud of a colored up brookie.

I actually had someone send me a PB link with project pictures. IT said too bad, have them send them some other way....

No, the Adirondacks - with Gus having school that really makes longer trips tuff. We had nice warm temps like you had for your opener, though. I was hoping for some cool nights, but we only got to the 50's and I think the slow fishing was a result. I was hoping for frost.

Tod,
Looks like a great time,i was touched by the image of Gus and his dog. Great memories.

Thanks Bill. He loves that yellow dog. I still can't get him excited about picking up the dog's crap though :).

Sweet, How Nice is that! Velvet buck too boot?

Thanks Jode. Velvet was just about to come off, so it was pretty scruffy looking. You can see some red spots if you look close.

Yep, that and a bunch of other sites.
They are using a program to block content, it almost seems random. If we want a certain site unblocked, we have to send in a request when the auto-block pops up.
We had to get them to unblock the local TV stations to see our annual Coastal Cleanup public service announcements.

I suppose in the Adirondacks that's a laker rather than a togue. Of all the local fish and game names around the country, I think Maine's tradition of calling lakers (or "macs" to those of you west of New England) "togue" is the one that resonates the most with me. It's pronounced like "toge", with a long "o" and a hard "g". I'm not sure where it comes from--I'd guess it's Wabanaki with maybe some French influence.

PS, per Google: 1830-40; < Canadian French < Eastern Algonquian, perhaps shortening of Micmac atoγwa·su trout

I grew up using laker, nothing else (well nothing other than lake trout). I can't imagine saying as you first get color on one "ooooh, togue" or "ooooooh, Mackinaw", it will always be "ooooh laker" for me. I like those char these days.

I like how Gus is studying that beautiful fish. I'm guessing he doesn't enjoy being outside holding slimy fish very much. :)

Congratulations on all the success. Nice early season buck.

I didn't know that pic was taken, since I was getting the gear ready to get back fishing, but there is a series of candid pics of him with the fish that Jen took. One cute one that looks like him having a heart to heart with the fish.

I wouldn't have thought we could catch a fish that matched his hat that well.

Awesome stuff Tod......How did Gus like deer hunting ?

He loves deer hunting, because we draw on a note pad and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drink soymilk out of mason jars and only hunt for 2 hours at a time. I hunt with him out of a double bull and that is the only way I could imagine it working out. I found putting amplifying ear muffs on him works amazingly well to make him conscious of the sounds he makes. We process a lot of deer every year and I always joke with him that he has to start gutting them. This was the first deer he helped dress (helping by holding a leg), so that was cool. When he can dress them and drag them out - then we will be talking!
