???What double barrel to buy???

I just picked up the Husqvana SxS I purchased off GunBroker and delivered through my local FFL. As advertised the condition is in excellent condition with a price point well below $1,000. I will be having the chokes opened up to IM & Skeet 2 and the chambers taken to 3"

The internet is great - research indicates the gun was;
model 615AS was built between 1949 & 1952
serial number is from mid 1950
proof marks indicate Goran Johanson did the final fitting

Hard to see in photos but all screws line up and case color is good - very tight. Even my local dealer was impressed

I plan to use 1.25 ounce ITX loads that run about 9200 psi. and 1.25 lead loads with no shot cup for pheasants. I'm no gun smith I would think the gun should be able to handle these loads long term.

Nice gun Paul. How heavy is it? Why are you going to lengthen it to 3"? At the pressure you are aiming for there are plenty of 2 3/4" loads, at least by the book pressures, that are under with plenty of speed for pheasants and ducks (with the ITX). No need for more then 1 1/4 oz for any pheasant alive. Heck I've shot plenty of wild birds with a 20ga shooting 1oz.

Paul, from those pics that Husky looks like a great gun. I would take that into the blind any day.

It appears that by lenghtening the chamber to 3" I can pick up speed while keeping presures down and expand my loading options. Hoping to move 1.25 of shot at close to 1400 FPS. Chokes are really tight full and extra full. I just have a little pocket cheater gauge but based on that they are really tight. Gun predates plastic shot cups so the production chokes make sense. I have been shooting the brush type wads from BPI that have no shot cup in my 20 gauge and really like them. Figure I'll load some 12 gauge 1.25 #5 or #6 for pheasants.

Gun weighs in a 6.7 lbs.

Congrats on the gun, looks nice.

You would have to look at some of Sherman Bell's and Tom Armbrust's work in DGJ, on keep the pressures down just by lengthing chambers. The risk you run is creating a much thinner barrel wall thickness by lengthing them at the highest pressure point, so you in essence negate any pressure redcution by creating a thin wall. I don't remember the numbers but they studied putting in longer shells into a pressure gun, 3" think even 3.5". If you want PM me and I can get you in touch with Tom himself or my brother that helped with doing that work or maybe Mike or Pete remember more info on that work they did.

at 6.7lns I don't know that I would want to go to 1400fps with 1 1/4, the recoil alone is going to be pretty good and there is that much more stress on the stock. You aso don't want speed with ITX it acts like lead, slower is better on lead.

Husky are good guns, but your right in keeping pressures down. You will also need to see where that straight grip sights when putting it up to your shoulder. For me straight grips tend to aim high on me. Perfect for rising upland birds, but not for incoming waterfowl.

Thanks for all the input. I will be seeing the gunsmith on Sat and get his opinion once he inspects the gun. His intial phone thoughts were that the gun has thick enough tubes to safely lenghten the chambers.

I went back and checked my loading data - the load I'l looking at is 1.25 ounce payload in 3" hull - leaves barrel at 1380 with 9000 PSI. Can't seem to get that in 2.75 inch hull can't get the payload over 1.125.
Thanks
