What is a post turtle?

All of the "throw the bums out" remarks are pretty much usless due to our current system of chosing canidates regardles if its for federal or state positions. I complained without stop in 1980 when we got to chose between a peanut farmer and an actor although one could argue that Mr. Reagan did a fine job. Somehow, we need to completely overhaul the nominating process, limit campaign spending to much lower than it is now and deny canidates money from any and all speacial interest groups/people. The question is, how would that be possible when those we elect are the ones controlling the process? The alternative I quess, would be to refuse to vote for any of them but in reality, what good would that do? Or we could revolt.

not george washington.... FDR

maybe we should give ralph nader a chance this time around. ;)

I certainly hope you're kidding...FDR took us off the Gold Standard, confiscated all but small amounts of gold, and ushered in the progressive movement to socialize our society. This is a further step in that direction. I guess many among us truly are Socialist/Marxists. I for one am not. A free market with proper regulation to prevent fraud (which is a felony) is the best system to prevent out-of-control inflation. A free capitol based system enriches the greatest cross-section of society. Giving away home loans to unsuitable individuals with poor credit should be proof enough of that.

Like a moth drawn to a flame I find I must enter this thread. To start with, the magic number is 60. Under a recent rule, a bill in the Senate must have 60 votes to make it to the floor to be voted on. This means several senators, in the current senate must vote in a bipartisan manner. Attempts to draft a bill increasing oversight of the lending industry have failed because of a lack of sixty votes.

Why were loans given to individuals who never could afford them in the first place, that's what the congress wanted. And, with the good times rolling in the home loan industry, and the "bright young 'B School Grads,' thinking up new ways to loan money and to account for the money.... you could afford the $1000 bottle of wine and to make nice contributions to your elected official. This plan to put everyone into their own home has been around for quite a while. Primarily a Democrat program, at least 59 of our elected officials seem to have decided the money was too good to pass up ..... certainly you could not get a vote for oversight. Let's not overlook the fact that it was not only low income individuals who got these loans, but quite a few individuals with good incomes who bought the "big house," or the "summer home," or slapped a little paint on a house to flip. Why the price was going to rise forever. I feel certain that everyone on this site got that pre-approved offer from a lending agency telling them they were able to get a home equity loan for 125% of their home value. It was "summertime and the living was easy."

I am afraid that if we want to know what the problem is, we, as a country need only to look in the mirror. I AM QUILTY. Oh, I vote in every election, but I enjoyed watching my retirement accounts go up, wondered about people moving into homes but having no furniture, and was too lazy to sit down and hand write a note to my Senators and Congressman letting them know when I was concerned or unhappy with a policy. I don't believe it was on this site, but I once read a thread that stated, "I only have 60 days to hunt ducks, I'm not going to waste time to vote."

Now the press is in this up to their necks. Anyone ever read an article saying "something smells in Denmark," referring to the home loan industry. How about an article about dumb or clueless any politician was. I can't think of any, but I keep seeing overly made up blonds with their tatas hanging out, breathlessly telling me Governor Palin is an idiot, the sky is falling, and that a hurricane is a bad thing and you should evacuate. Should any of us give a shit what they think.

As for Governor Palin, she did get elected to the job. That's quite a feat and a lot more than I have done. Do I care how much she knows about foreign affairs, HELL NO. If I am reading this thread correctly, none of us are happy with any of the fuzz nuts. I see nothing that really makes me feel warm a fuzzy about their grasp of foreign policy. Oh, yes, before signing off and getting a stiff Bourbon with a splash of bitters, If I remember my history correctly, Harry Truman was not seen as being the brightest bulb, and many wondered if FDR knew what he was doing. History has shown that he did one hell of a job.

I hope you will all write your elected officials and that you vote them out of office in November. Best to you all, and be safe in your hunting this season. R.Bell

If you don't recall remembering your history, then maybe you should bone up a little. And if you're not old enough to remember something called "History class" from your school days, rather they called it "social studies" then maybe, I would argue, you don't have a clue what the real truth is, without continued self-imposed study. Now a day they teach kids more about Clinton than Lincoln.

As with anything that works best, balance is the key. The socialists and liberals who give away to the masses, most of whom don't deserve the handouts, are on one end of the rope, and the hard core conservatives who could care less about anything other than the bottom line are on the other end of the rope. Both are to blame for the current crisis.

FDR was the former. And surely he was well intended, but nevertheless, he wrought socialism, collectivism, and the progressive mantra down upon us all, after the same extremes caused the great depression. FDR is best judged when compared to his kin Teddy Roosevelt, who I believe used the government in ways the founders intended; to regulate in a reasonable fashion, without excess, and without unnecessary burden on the free markets, which caused our current dilemma. And no one was a better example of grit and hard work.

As Dutch pointed out, not knowing history, you are doomed to repeat it. I will add; not knowing and respecting history, you are doomed to repeat it. And that, my friends is what we have here. Socialism has tipped the scales once more and caused a crisis. And the answer is more of the same, a big government bail-out (which is what it will be regardless what they call it). History is repeating itself, and we will lose a little more freedom for it.

Hitch its simple for me. What will a McCain Administration do to hunting and gun rights? What will an Obama administration do to hunting and gun rights?
Supreme Court Judge and federal judge appointmets are the most important outcome we should be looking at as far as our indiviudual freedoms go and how they will be interpeted.
So Vote Obama and insure we will be fight every inch of our way in the future with what he will set in action through his administration

Very important points we should not forget.

Has anyone else heard the commercial from Obama where he dug up some tool to stump for him from the Hunting and shooting spmething something?

Hitch

You got me Hitch. No excuse, did a poor job of editing. FDR was criticized for his choice of Truman for vice president. The man was unknown, not tested, blah, blah, blah. History has shown the choice was for our best. Consider me taken to the woodshed

Yes. I took History class in high school and at the university. They didn't teach history that well back then either. As for Social Studies, I have no problem with it. If it is taught well, which often it is not, it would be OK. The text books are a joke and I find too many teachers adding their feelings to the class. Oh, I taught social studies and science after 30 years in the Army ........ I'm retired, retired, retired .......I'm old enough.

How I feel about the current situation is not that different from how you feel. I agree with you that we don't give enough respect to those who work hard and produce for the Nation. I left teaching because I was tired of children and parents who felt ENTITLED, to an education and grades with no work. I was there to teach, not entertain. I believe this bailout will be taken to court and found unconstitutional. The best I can find in this election cycle is that whoever wins will be stuck with this bailout and have nothing for anything else. Real change will have to come from the states ....... just my opinion.

Now I find a real ray of hope in this thread. That a lot of us are taking time to read, think and reply about the current economic mess, something which I find happens all to seldom today ....To often you are told rather than informed. None of us are happy. Most of us have not experienced a problem of this magnitude, well we've not had one possibly since the Great Depression. Of course I did buy my first home for 10.5% when Jimmy was president. I, for one, have no confidence in our elected officials to do what is best for the general welfare and not what is best for theirs. I have no idea how I will vote, but throwing them all out is high on my list.
Again, I enjoy the views, hope all are doing well and that you have a safe hunting season. R.Bell

I too bought my first house when Carter was President. Carter, another socialist, and now a known anti-Semite not only capitulated to the original terroists of our modern day, his out of control liberal policies were responsible for running up interest rates to 17-18%. I had to do a contract with a balloon to afford my first house (9.25%)

Hitch

And don't forget the 12% unemployment rate under our boy Jimmy, as well as the gas lines when he put a cap on gasoline prices. Got to stop or I'll become angry. R.Bell

Thanks Hitch for getting it right. Look at who got the most money from Freddie and Fannie. Dodd, Obama are thr top 2. In fairness, Sen. McCain was all the down at 7th place. Now Frank Raines, who made some where between 90 and 100 mil while running Fannie into the ground is on Sen. Obama's campaigne staff as a financial advisor.

Yep Hitch. It's some jakass that used to play for the REDskins. It's playing quite a bit here in VA. Reminds me of a joke that goes," What do you do if you are locked in a room with a lion, a tiger a redskins fan and you have a gun with only 2 bullets? Shot the redskins fan......twice."
